Strong Second Half Not Enough for Women’s Lacrosse in Loss to Marist

Game Recap
Marist junior Samantha Mehalick and sophomore Kelly George scored a combined 10 goals as the Red Foxes (5-7, 2-2 MAAC) defeated Canisius, 19-14, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon from Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Joining Mehalick and George in the scoring column was seniors Audrey Cerrone and Hailey Wagner with two goals apiece, while five other Red Foxes tallied a goal in the win. Defending MAAC Goalie of the Year, sophomore Delaney Galvin made 13 saves on 27 shots in-between the pipes on for a .481 save percentage. Marist dominated the draw control 21-14 and recorded 12 successful clear attempts in 13 tries.

Graduate student Jen Reininger recorded four points on three goals and an assist in the loss, while Bryar Cummings recorded her first hat trick of the season to go along with one assist. Cummings won eight draw controls, picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers to go with her four points. Senior Jourdan Roemer was held to just two goals but was able to record three helpers on the afternoon.

Syracuse, N.Y., product Lauren Gilbert made her third consecutive start in the cage for the Golden Griffins (0-12, 0-4 MAAC). However, the sophomore was replaced by freshman netminder Shannon Maroney before the end of the first half.

The Blue and Gold jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the start of play as Reininger scored twice in the first five minutes of action before Marist outscored the Griffs 11-3 for the remainder of the first period.

The half for Marist was highlighted by a 6-0 run that lasted 6:57 of game time before Reininger scored at the nine-minute mark on a man-up opportunity to put a halt to the run. Rachel Heidenreich scored her first of two goals less than a minute later before the Red Foxes scored back-to-back goals to end the half with an 11-5 lead.

Cummings started and ended the 3-0 spurt at the start of the second stanza to pull Canisius within three, 11-8. Marist would answer with three-straight goals of its own to once again make the deficit six goals, but it didn't last long as the Golden Griffins would once again go on a 3-0 run with goals from Cummings, Roemer and junior Rachel Ryan put one past the Marist goalie.

With the score 14-11, Canisius and Marist would trade goals for 10 of the final 11 minutes of action before George scored the game's final tally with 20 seconds remaining to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"It was our mental mistakes and lack of execution that hurt us today. We struggled in the first half for seven minutes, and Marist went on run which made it difficult for us to get back into the game. We need to clean up our mental mistakes and value the ball more and play with confidence to get the result we are looking for."

"Our players did battle until the very end of the game and showed grit, so we commend them for that. But we need to compete hard for every minute of the game."

Game Notes
• Marist now leads the all-time series 17-13.
• With her hat trick today, Cummings now has two for her career. The Cicero, N.Y., product set season-highs in ground balls, draw controls and shots on goal.
• For the fourth-straight contest, Roemer tallied five or more points, giving her 21 for her career.
• Reininger recorded her 23rd career hat trick and third of the 2019 season.
• For the third-straight time and fifth time in six games sophomore Marissa Malvaso had a multi-goal performance.
