Softball Earns Split with Saint Peter's on Sunday

RECAP
The Canisius softball team earned a split with MAAC foe Saint Peter's Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Griffins posted a 4-1 win in game one before falling, 7-4, in game two. With the split, Canisius is now 12-29 overall and 6-9 in league play, while Saint Peter's moves to 8-44 overall and 2-16 in conference action.

GAME 40
Canisius took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as redshirt-junior Lauren Castro hit a two-run homer over the left field fence. The Griffs added to their lead in the fourth inning when junior Chelsea Czapkowski singled up the middle to plate fellow junior Ashley Barnett, who got on earlier in the frame with a single. Canisius held a 3-0 lead until the fifth inning, when junior Sue Vi scored on a fielding error, making it 4-0.
 
St. Peter's scored its only run in the top-half of the sixth inning when Theamaris Ramierez single through the left-side to plate Harley Connors, but it wasn't enough as Canisius secured the victory, 4-1.
 
Canisius had five hits in the game-one victory, with Castro, Czapkowski, Barnett, junior Morgan Altman and sophomore Erin Hufford each notching a base knock. 

Game 41
Game two saw Saint Peter's get on the board in the top-half of the first with an RBI single off the bat of Alina Guevara and two-run homer over the left-field fence from Ramirez to put the visiting team up, 3-0.

Czapkowski answered back for the Blue and Gold in the second inning with a single to center field that scored Barnett. Sophomore Kara Paradowski tied the game later in the frame when she singled to right field, scoring Vi and Czapkowski to knot the score at 3-3.

St. Peter's regained their three-run cushion in the third thanks to a Georgia Verrastro three-run homer. The Peacocks tallied their final run of the day in the fifth inning when Barabra Verrastro hit an RBI double to center field. In the home half of the seventh, Castro recoded her second homerun of the day, a solo shot to center field, but it wasn't enough as St. Peter's earned the victory, 7-4.

Game Notes
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Saint Peter's by a 54-13 count.
• The Griffs have won 25 of their last 27 contests against the Peacocks.
• Castro's homeruns were her fourth and fifth longballs of the season.
• The win in the circle for Castro in game one was the eighth of her career as a Griff.

Up Next
Canisius completes its regular-season schedule next weekend with four home games, beginning with a doubleheader against Quinnipiac on May 3. The first pitch of doubleheader against the Bobcats is scheduled for 1 p.m.
