Baseball Stays in First With Comeback Win at Fairfield

RECAP
With senior Conner Morro down to the last strike of the game, the Canisius baseball team was able to pull out a six-run ninth inning and 8-3 win over Fairfield Sunday afternoon at Alumni Baseball Diamond in Fairfield, Conn.

The victory moves the Golden Griffins to 21-20 overall and 14-4 in the MAAC, maintaining first place in the league standings, while the Stags dropped to 26-17 and 12-6 in conference play.

Leading the Griffs' comeback was senior Joseph Preziuso, who drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a double in addition to another hit and two runs scored, and junior Jake Burlingame's three-run home run. Junior Jacob Victor also contributed with a two-hit day that included an RBI, while redshirt-junior William Krull tallied a double and a run scored in the win.

Tom Ryan tallied the lone multi-hit performance for Fairfield, as he and Dan Ryan both notched a double in the loss.

Canisius got the first run of the game in the third as Victor was able to single home Preziuso from third.

Krull added another run for the Griffs in the fourth inning when he led off with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball and then took home on a wild pitch.

Fairfield rallied back in the sixth, as Anthony Boselli was brought in on a wild pitch and Dylan Reynolds followed with a single that scored Dan Ryan. Griffin Watson then got into a rundown with Reynolds on third, allowing Reynolds to crose home plate and give the Stags a 3-2 lead.

The score remained in favor of Fairfield until the ninth inning when down to its final strike, Canisius extended the game as Morro reached on an error and freshman Dylan Vincent followed up with a hit-by-pitch. Preziuso then came up clutch with a double to the wall that plated both Morro and Vincent, giving the Griffs the lead again, 4-3. Senior Mark McKenna was then intentionally walked, and Burlingame provided insurance in the form of his three-run homer. A single by Victor was followed by another Fairfield error on a Stephen Bennett fly ball, allowing Victor's pinch-runner, junior Andy Leader, to score the eighth and final Canisius run.

Freshman Andrew Fron was dominant through five innings before giving up three runs in the sixth, allowing four hits in his start while fanning two. Junior Jared Burmaster allowed only two hits in his three innings of work to earn the win while fellow junior Will Frank finished with one strikeout in the final frame on the mound.

Starter Trey McLoughlin went four innings for the Stags, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits and punching out five batters. Eli Oliphant suffered the loss after being on the wrong side of six unearned runs in 4.2 innings, allowing three hits while striking out four. Nick Grabek mopped up by striking out on of his two batters faced.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Today was another character win for us. We have talked this year a lot about toughness and never letting the emotions of the game dictate our compete levels. We have a plan and process we work on daily, and game-days really validate that work for us. Today it took a little luck, a couple of bounces to go our way and a team that didn't give up. The team as a whole got rewarded for continuing to work our process and control what we can control.

"Joe Preziuso stepped up for us in a big spot and that guy deserves everything he is getting this year. He is a guy that makes our team go, and today he continued to do what he has done all year and we couldn't be prouder.

"Today was a very proud day for our team and we will enjoy it for the ride home and get right back to work this week."
