Softball Splits with Manhattan at Home

RECAP
The Canisius softball team split a pair of games Saturday with Manhattan, winning 4-3 in the opening contest before falling 13-2 in the the nightcap of a MAAC doubleheader Saturday afternoo at the Demske Sports Complex. The split moves the Jaspers to 20-24 overall and 7-9 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins shifted to 11-28 overall and 5-9 in league games.

GAME 38
The Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the home-half of the first inning, when junior Morgan Altman hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate sophomore Kara Paradowski, who got on with a bunt earlier in the frame. The Griffs added to their lead in the second inning when junior Gianna Degaltini hit a single to second base that scored freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks. Junior Chelsea Czapkowski followed up with a double to center field that plated Degaltini giving Canisius the lead, 3-0.
 
The Jaspers got on the board in the fourth inning when Jessie Rising hit an RBI double to left field, cutting the Griffs lead, 3-1. Canisius tacked on its fourth run of the game when Altman was walked with the bases loaded in the home-half of the fourth. Manhattan later threatened when it tallied two runs in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as Canisius secured the victory, 4-3.
 
Degaltini and Czapkowski both finished the opening game with three hits apiece. Sophomore Erin Hufford, Paradowski, Altman and Catallo-Stooks all recorded hits in the win as well, with Altman tallying two RBI.
 
Redshirt-junior Lauren Castro pitched the complete-game victory for the Griffs, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, fanning three batters over her seven innings in the circle.

GAME 39
In the second game, the Jaspers took an early 4-0 lead that lasted until the bottom of the fourth inning when Canisius sophomore Lindsi Dennis singled through the left side to plate junior Cassie Ho, who got on earlier that inning with a walk. Manhattan reopened its lead in the fifth inning when Daniela Chiorazzi sent an RBI double to left field and Victoria Alonso hit a two-run shot over the left field fence to increase their lead, 7-1.
 
Canisius added a run in the sixth when Catallo-Stooks singled to plate Altman, who got on earlier in the frame with a double to center field, to make it 7-2. In the seventh inning, the Jaspers offense exploded as they scored six runs on three hits to secure the victory, 13-2.
 
Freshman Alexis Churchill (2-6) took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sophomore Emily Nicosia took over in the circle for Churchill and allowed seven runs on three hits while striking out three in 2.1 innings. Redshirt-freshman Shealyn Ollison closed out the game for Canisius allowing one hit while fanning one in 0.1 innings.

Game Notes
• Saturday's doubleheader was the 71st and 72nd all-time meetings between Canisius and Manhattan on the softball diamond.
• Canisius leads the all-time series by a 54-18 margin.


UP NEXT
• Canisius continues its MAAC homestand on Sunday, when the Blue and Gold host Saint Peter's. Game one of the conference doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
