Early Offensive Explosion Leads Softball to a Sweep of St. Bonaventure

The Canisius softball team earned a sweep over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Blue and Gold took game one of the doubleheader, 12-0, before winning the nightcap, 10-5. The losses moved the Bonnies to 7-29 overall, while the Golden Griffins improved to 10-27 overall and 5-2 at home.

GAME 31
In the first game of the day, Canisius opened up the scoring in the second inning when freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks reached on an error by the shortstop and platted junior Sue Vi, who was pinch running for sophomore Lindsi Dennis. Juniors Chelsea Czapkowski and Morgan Altman added to the lead when Czapkowski drove in one run with a single and Altman cleared the bases with a three-run single that made it 5-0 in favor of the Griffs.

The Canisius offense exploded in the fifth inning with a seven-run rally, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of redshirt-junior Lauren Castro. Castro wasn't the only Griff to show her bat that inning, as Catallo-Stooks hit a three-run shot of her own later in the frame, securing the shutout, 12-0.

Sophomore Kara Paradowski and Czapkowski were the only Griffs to record a multi-hit game as they each tallied two base-knocks. Altman, Catallo-Stooks, Castro and senior Denver Keller each tabbed a hit in the game one win.

Freshman hurler Alexis Churchill (2-5) earned her second collegiate win and second complete-game shutout in the circle for Canisius, as she allowed just two hits while fanning six in 5.0 innings of work.

Game 32
St. Bonaventure struck first in the late game, scoring three runs on an Abigail Stone home run and a Madison Stewart double in the first inning. The Blue and Gold quickly answered with a run of its own in the home-half of that inning thanks to a double off the bat of Altman that scored Paradowski. Canisius tacked on a run in both the second and third innings to bring them within striking distance of the visiting team, 4-3.

In the fourth inning, Paradowski put the Griffs in front with a two-run single up the middle to plate Vi and sophomore Erin Hufford. Catallo-Stooks followed up with her second home run of the day over the center field fence to extend the home team's lead to 7-4. Canisius closed out its scoring in the sixth when senior Destiny Holani ripped an RBI double to center field and junior Gianna Degaltini hit a sacrifice fly to plate Keller. The Bonnies tallied a run in the sixth as well, but it wasn't enough as Canisius secured the 10-5 victory.

Catallo-Stooks went 3-for-4 and Junior Cassie Ho went 2-for-3 in the second game of the day. Five other Griffs tallied a hit in the game two win.

Senior Molly Hennessy started game two for the Griffs, as she allowed four runs on four hits while fanning three in 2.1 innings of work. Redshirt-freshman Shealyn Ollison (1-2) closed out the game for the Blue and Gold, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three in 4.2 innings.
