Softball Drops a Pair of Close Games to Siena

RECAP
The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday at Siena, falling 3-2 (9 innings) in the opening contest and 4-1 in the afternoon matchup at the Siena Softball Field in Loudonville, N.Y. The wins improved the Saints to 16-18 overall and 8-4 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins fell to 8-27 overall and 4-8 in league games.

GAME 34
The Saints took a 2-0 lead in the home-half of the first inning, when sophomore Madysen Cossack hit a two-run homer over the left field fence. Junior Morgan Altman cut the lead in half with a solo shot of her own in the second inning. Fellow junior Brittany Sockwell tied the game, 2-2, with an RBI single in the fourth that plated sophomore Kara Paradowski

With neither side able to score over the last three innings, the two teams needed extra innings to decide the opening contest. Finally, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Siena's Yamila Evans singled to the pitcher and Lauren Sabihon doubled to left center to score her, giving the Saints the 3-2 walk-off victory.

Sophomore Lindsi Dennis recorded a multi-hit game and five other Griffs tabbed a base knock in the game one loss.

Canisius sophomore Emily Nicosia was in the circle first for Canisius as she allowed three runs on 10 hits to go along with three strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work. Redshirt-freshman Shealyn Ollison took the loss after she allowed one hit and one run in 1.0 inning of work.

GAME 35
In the second game, the score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Siena's Loryn DeFalco reached on an error that plated Jess Vollmer, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. The Blue and Gold quickly responded with a solo shot from redshirt-junior Lauren Castro in the sixth to make it 1-1. Siena secured the 4-1 victory in the bottom of the seventh when Cossack hit her second homer of the day with runners on first and second.

Freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks was the only Griff to record a multi-hit game. Sophomore Erin Hufford, senior Denver Keller and Castro each tabbed a hit in the loss.

Castro (1-7) took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed four runs on five hits while fanning three, tossing 6.0 innings of work.
