Softball Shuts Down Buffalo in Sweep

The Canisius softball team earned a sweep over crosstown rival Buffalo on Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Blue and Gold took game one of the doubleheader, 2-0, before winning the afternoon match-up, 8-1. The losses moved the Bulls to 9-26-1 overall, while the Golden Griffins improved to 8-25 overall and 3-2 at home.

GAME 31
In the first game of the day, Canisius scored the only runs of the contest in the fourth inning when junior Gianna Degaltini tripled to left-center to plate senior Destiny Holani and junior Ashley Barnett.

Sophomore Kara Paradowski and Barnett were the only Griffs to record a multi-hit game as they each tallied two base-knocks. Degaltini and freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks each tabbed a hit in the game one win.

Freshman hurler Alexis Churchill (1-5), earned her first collegiate win in the circle for Canisius as she allowed just three hits while fanning nine in 7.0 shutout innings of work.

Game 32
The Griffs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in game two, as Paradowski reached base on a fielding error and then got into a run down between first and second, allowing junior Sue Vi to score. Buffalo tied the game, 1-1, in the visiting half of the second when Alexis Matheney hit an RBI single through the right side.

In the third inning, junior Chelsea Czapkowski got the rally started for the Griffs with a single to left. Vi laid down a bunt in front of the plate to move Czapkowski's pinch runner, freshman Lily Wozniak, to second base. Paradowski then reached based on a fielding error by the pitcher and junior Morgan Altman then put a bunt down to score Wozniak.

Junior Ashley Barnett continued the frame by hitting an RBI single through the left-side to plate Vi. MAAC Student-Athlete of the Week Lindsi Dennis added to the lead with a single through the right-side that scored Paradowski and Altman. Degaltini closed out the scoring in the third inning with an RBI single to left field. The Griffs' final run of the contest was scored in the fourth inning thanks to a single off the bat of Catallo-Stooks that plated Paradowski.

Vi went 2-for-3 while six other Griffs tallied a hit in the game two victory.

Freshman Hayley Tamaro (1-5), earned her first collegiate win in the circle for Canisius as she allowed just one run on four hits while fanning two in 4.0 innings of work. Redshirt freshman Shealyn Ollison closed out the game for the Blue and Gold, allowing just one hit while striking out three in 3.0 innings.
