Game Recap: Softball |

Iona Sweeps Softball on Sunday

Canisius dropped a pair of games Sunday at Iona, falling 2-0 in the opening contest and 6-1 in the afternoon matchup at Rice Oval Field in New Rochelle, N.Y. The wins moved the Gaels to 13-19 overall and 8-2 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins shifted to 6-25 overall and 4-6 in league games.

GAME 30
The Griffs and Gaels were locked in a scoreless tie until the sixth inning, when Iona's Jasmine Temple hit a two-run homer to left field and secured the victory, 2-0. Freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks was the only Griff to record a multi-hit game as she tallied two base-knocks. Junior Morgan Altman and sophomores Lindsi Dennis and Erin Hufford each tabbed a hit in the game one loss.

Sophomore hurler Emily Nicosia (5-8), took the loss in the circle for Canisius as she allowed just two runs on two hits while fanning four in 6.0 innings of work. Iona pitcher Kara Zazzaro earned the win in game one as she allowed five hits and fanned eight in seven innings.

GAME 31
In the second game of the day, Canisius scored its only run in the third inning when senior Denver Keller tripled down the left field line and plated Altman, who got on with a walk earlier in the inning. The Griffs held a 1-0 lead until the fourth when Temple hit a solo-shot to left tying it up, 1-1. Iona tacked on two runs in the fifth thanks to a double off the bat of Rebecca Gabert and a single from Jessica Chilcott.

In the sixth, Gabert had the key hit for the Gaels, as she hit a two-run double to right-center to put Iona up 5-1. Chilcott ended the inning with an RBI double to secure the 6-1 win for the home team. Iona's Marnie Skinner earned the win in the circle after she allowed three hits and struck out four.

Redshirt junior Lauren Castro took the loss for Canisius after she allowed five runs on eight hits, while fanning two, in 5.2 innings of work. Nicosia closed out the game for the Griffs, allowing two hits in 0.1 innings.
