Late Rally Earns Softball A Split with Fairfield

RECAP
Canisius split a pair of games Saturday at Fairfield, falling 6-4 in the opening contest before earning a 6-2 victory in the afternoon matchup at Alumni Softball Field in Fairfield, Conn. The split moves the Stags to 18-15 overall and 4-4 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins shifted to 6-23 overall and 4-4 in league games.

GAME 28
The Griffs took a 1-0 lead in the visiting-half of the first inning, when sophomore Kara Paradowski singled to the short stop to plate fellow sophomore Erin Hufford, who got on with a single to third base. The Stags took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the third when Mikayla Rubin knocked a double to the left field-fence plating Amanda Ulzheimer and Alisha Marshall.

Junior Morgan Altman tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth inning when she hit a single that scored fellow junior Sue Vi. Fairfield tallied four runs in the home half of the fourth after Ulzheimer and Madison Robicheau each tabbed an RBI-single. The Griffs added two runs in the seventh, but it was enough as Fairfield secured the win, 6-4.

Senior Denver Keller and Paradowski each recorded a multi-hit game. Altman, Catallo-Stooks, Hufford and junior Brittany Sockwelleach tabbed a base knock in the game one loss.

Canisius sophomore Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle after she allowed six runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Redshirt-junior Lauren Castro closed out the game, allowing just one hit to go along with one strikeout in 2.2 innings.

GAME 29
In the second game, the Stags held a 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning when Altman started a six-run rally for the Griffs. The junior doubled to right center-field and was plated by junior pinch-hitter Ashley Barnett who singled to left field. Castro followed with a double to right field which advanced Barnett's pinch-runner, Gianna Degaltinito third base. Castro advanced to third and Degaltini scored on a wild pitch. Castro then took home on another wild pitch as Hufford walked.

Later that inning, Paradowski singled to the pitcher moving Hufford to second base. Catallo-Stooks sent a long ball to center field good for a double and plated Paradowski and Hufford making it, 6-2 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Castro (1-7) earned the victory in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed two runs on six hits while fanning four, in 7.0 innings of work.
