Softball Drops a Pair on First Day of Colonial Classic

The Canisius softball team went 0-2 on the first day of the Colonial Classic in Washington, D.C. The Golden Griffins started the day with an 8-0 loss to UMBC in six innings before falling to the host Colonials, 10-8, in the afternoon matchup.

Game 7
UMBC (4-5) led 4-0 after two innings of play thanks to an RBI-double from Sierra Pierce and an RBI-single off the bat of Maddie Daigneau. The score would remain 4-0 in favor of UMBC until the top of the fourth, when the Retrievers tallied another run courtesy of a Courtney Coppersmi double.

UMBC added to its lead scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and the sixth innings for a final score of 8-0 in six frames. The Griffs (0-8), tallied two hits in the loss, both credited to freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks, who hit a single in the second and a double in the fourth.

Redshirt-junior Lauren Castro (0-3) took the loss in the circle as she allowed four runs on five hits to go with one strikeout. Sophomore Emily Nicosia threw 2.0 innings for Canisius in relief and allowed four runs on two hits to go with two strikeouts.

Game 8
In the second game of the day, Canisius jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Erin Hufford got things started with a walk, followed by a single from fellow sophomore Kara Paradowski. The sophomores each stole a bag, putting runners on second and third. Junior Brittany Sockwell reached first on a throwing error, scoring Hufford. Paradowski stole her second bag of the inning and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher, increasing the Griffs' lead to 2-0. Junior Ashley Barnett helped the effort in that inning as well with an RBI-groundout to short that pushed Stockwell across the plate.

The third proved to be a big inning for the Blue and Gold as Hufford, Paradowski and Catallo-Stooks each hit a single to load the bases. Sockwell added to the Griffs' lead with an RBI-double to clear the bases, making it 6-0.  Barnett then placed a perfect bunt in front of the plate that scored Sockwell and senior Denver Keller followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Barnett.

The Colonials quickly answered in the home half of the third inning with three runs on one hit. George Washington scored five more runs off of four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game, 8-8.

The host Colonials secured the win in the fifth inning thanks to a Jen Cone two-run homer over the right-field fence, which made the score 10-0 in favor of the home team.

Redshirt-freshman Shealyn Ollison made her first appearance in the circle as a Griff, allowing five runs on two hits to go along with a strikeout. Freshman Alexis Churchill (0-3) took the loss in the circle after she allowed five runs on six hits while fanning two.
