Softball Sweeps Rider on the Road

RECAP
The Canisius softball team closed out the weekend with a sweep over Rider at the Herb and Joan Young Softball Field in Lawrenceville, N.J. The Blue and Gold took game one of the doubleheader, 8-6, before winning the nightcap, 9-1. The losses moved the Broncs to 3-23 overall and 1-3 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins shifted to 4-20 overall and 2-2 in league games.

GAME 23
The Canisius offense exploded in the first inning when freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks singled to right field to plate sophomore Erin Hufford, who got on with a single to third base. Junior Brittany Sockwell helped the effort by singling through the left side and fellow junior Cassie Ho doubled down the left line to score Catallo-Stooks. Sockwell scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring for the first inning. Monmouth scored a run the bottom of the first when Kelsey Marigliano took home on a wild pitch.
 
Canisius tacked on two more runs in the second when Hufford got on with a single and Catallo-Stooks singled through the left side to plate her. Sockwell showed her bat again as she doubled down the left-line and senior Denver Keller hit a sac fly to plate Sockwell's pinch runner, freshman Lily Wozniak. In the third inning, Canisius extended its lead to seven after sophomore Lindsi Dennis sent one over the right-field fence, making it 8-1.
 
Rider tacked on three runs in the third and two in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Canisius secured the 8-6 victory.
 
Dennis, Hufford, Catallo-Stooks and Sockwell each tabbed a multi-hit game in the win. Senior Molly McGuire, Ho and Keller each tallied a hit in the first game as well.
 
Canisius sophomore Emily Nicosia earned the victory in the circle after she allowed six runs on 10 hits, while fanning five, in 7.0 innings of work.

GAME 24
The Griffs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Sockwell singled up the middle to plate Hufford and sophomore Kara Paradowski, who each singled through the left side. In the second inning, Keller doubled to left field and scored Ho, who reached based on a throwing error, increasing the Griffs lead to 3-0.
 
The fifth inning saw the Griffs score five runs on six hits, highlighted by a Sockwell grand slam. Keller began that inning with a single followed by a bunt from Hufford, which brought up Paradowski who also singled to first. Catallo-Stooks reached on a fielder's choice as Keller was thrown out at home. Sockwell secured the win when the junior sent one deep down the right-field line to score Hufford, Paradowksi and Catallo-Stooks. Rider tacked it's lone run in the fifth but it wasn't enough as Canisius earned the 9-1 victory.

Nicosia earend her second win of the day as she allowed just one run on four hits to go along with one strikeout. With the wins, Nicosia improves to 4-6 for the season.

Keller went 3-for-3 in the win for Canisius, while Sockwell, Hufford and Paradowski each had two hits in the second game of the twinbill. Senior Destiny Holani, Junior Sue Vi and Dennis each tabbed a hit in game two.
 
Game Notes
• Sunday's doubleheader was the 49th and 50th all-time meetings between Canisius and Rider on the softball diamond.
• Canisius leads the all-time series by a 35-15 margin.
• Keller went 3-for-3 in game two with two singles and a double
• Dennis' game one homer is the second of her career.
• Sockwell's grand slam in game two is the seventh home run of her career.
• Paradowski is now 24-for-25 in stolen bases.

• Canisius returns to action on Wednesday, April 3, when the Griffs play host to Syracuse in a non-league doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m.
