Softball Defeated by Syracuse in Home Opener

GAME RECAP
The Canisius softball team fell to Syracuse, 9-6, in its home opener at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. With the loss, the Golden Griffins dropped to 4-21 on the season and Syracuse improved to 15-19 in 2019.

GAME 25
Syracuse got things started in the top half of the second when Gianna Carideo hit a single to centerfield to score Lailoni Mayfield and Alex Acevedo. The Orange added to their lead when Alexis Kaiser scored on a wild pitch later in that inning. The Griffs got on the board in the bottom of the third when sophomore Erin Hufford singled through the left side and fellow sophomore Kara Paradowski doubled to score her. Paradowski advanced to third and eventually took home on the throw from the outfield, making it 3-2.

Syracuse scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth before getting three more in the seventh inning. The vistors increased their lead to 9-2 thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Mayfield and an RBI triple off the bat of Gabby Teran. The home-half of the seventh saw senior Denver Keller start the rally for the Griffs with a single to left field. Keller's pinch runner junior Sue Vi, Hufford and Paradowski were all on base when freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks doubled to center field to plate Vi and Hufford. Sophomore Lindsi Dennis and junior Brittany Sockwell each hit RBI singles, but it wasn't enough as Syracuse secured the 9-6 victory.

Six Griffs tabbed a hit in the loss, with Paradowski and Dennis each recording a multi-hit game.

Redshirt-freshman Shealyn Ollison (0-1) got the start in the circle for the Griffs. The San Diego, Calif., native lasted two innings, surrendering three runs on three hits. Redshirt-junior Lauren Castro went the next 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on ten hits before handing the ball to freshman Alexis Churchill for the last inning.
