Softball Earns Split at Charlotte

Canisius split a pair of games Wednesday at Charlotte, topping the 49ers by an 8-4 margin in extra innings in the opening contest before taking a 4-3 loss in the nightcap at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The split moves the Golden Griffins to 2-18 in 2019, while the 49ers see their record shift to 10-15 on the season.

In the first game, Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the top-half of the first when sophomore Kara Paradowski singled to the short stop and freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks singled down the left line. Paradowski then stole third and advanced to home on a throwing error by the third baseman.

The 49ers tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Imani Rochelle doubled to left and later scored on a fielder's choice. The teams traded runs in the the fourth as senior Destiny Holani hit a double down the left line and fellow senior Molly McGuire singled through the left side, scoring pinch runner Lily Wozniak to give the Griffs a 2-1 lead before Lizzy Birch brought Charlotte level in the bottom half of the frame with a solo homer. The score remained locked at 2-2 through out the remainder of regulation, forcing extra innings.

The Canisius offense exploded in the top of the eighth when sophomore Erin Hufford, Catallo-Stooks and redshirt junior Lauren Castro each recorded run-scoring singles, good for four runs. Senior Denver Keller closed out the eighth-inning barrage for Canisius with a two-run double down the left line, putting the Griffs up, 8-2. The home team tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough as Canisius picked up its second win of the season with the four-run triumph over Charlotte.

Sophomore Emily Nicosia (2-5) picked up the win for the Griffs, allowing four runs on 10 hits while fanning two in 8.0 innings of work.

In the second game against Charlotte, Canisius trailed the 49ers 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but an RBI single off the bat of Catallo-Stooks and a fielders choice by the short stop put Canisius up, 3-2. Charlotte took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Harris hit a two-run homer to secure the one-run victory.
