Softball Falls Twice in MAAC Opener

RECAP
Canisius dropped a pair of games Saturday at Monmouth, falling 4-1 in the opening contest before taking a 9-1 loss in the afternoon matchup at MU Softball Park in West Long Branch, N.J. The wins move the Hawks to 17-10 overall and 4-0 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins fell to 2-20 overall and 0-2 in league games.

GAME 21
The Griffs took an early 1-0 lead when freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks singled to right field to plate sophomore Kara Paradowski, who got on with a single to the short stop. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the home half of the first when Amber Wonziak and Amanda Hopeck each tabbed RBI singles. Monmouth tallied a run in the second and third innings to secure the win, 4-1.
 
Senior Denver Keller, Paradowski and Catallo-Stooks each tabbed a base knock in the game one loss.
 
Canisius sophomore Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle after she allowed four runs on seven hits, while fanning six, in 6.0 innings of work. With the loss, Nicosia moves to 2-6 for the season.

GAME 22
In the second game, Griffs scored their only run in the top of the first when Catallo-Stooks hit a sac-fly to right field to plate sophomore Erin Hufford, who singled through the left side. Monmouth started its scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Kayla Rosado and Wozniak each notched an RBI single. Monmouth increased its lead in the second inning when Lindsey Baron hit a two-run homer over the center-field fence. The Hawks tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 9-1 victory.


Freshman Alexis Churchill took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed six runs on six hits in 1.1 innings of work. Redshirt freshman Shea Ollison closed out the game, allowing three runs on five hits to go along with one strikeout.

Hufford went 3-for-3 with a single in the loss for Canisius, while juniors Brittany Sockwell and Chelsea Czapkowski also had hits in the second game of the twinbill.
 
Game Notes
• Saturday's doubleheader was the 12th and 13th all-time meetings between Canisius and Monmouth on the softball diamond.
• Monmouth leads the all-time series by a 11-2 margin.
• Hufford went 3-for-3 in game two with three singles

UP NEXT
• Canisius continues its MAAC trip in New Jersey Sunday, when the Blue and Gold travel to Rider. Game one of the conference doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
