Offense Leads Indiana to Sweep of Baseball

Game Recap
Using an eight-run third inning, Indiana finished off a series sweep of the Canisius baseball team with a 12-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Ind.

The win improved the Hoosiers to 11-8 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 4-14 in 2019.

Dylan Vincent led the Griffs with two hits, while Indiana had four players record two-hit performances. Drew Ashley and Ryan Fineman both homered for the Hoosiers, supporting a 14-strikeout start by Andrew Saalfrank.

Indiana got two runs on the board early in the first inning, as Matt Gorski swiped two bases after a walk to score on a Matt Lloyd sacrifice fly, and Ashley was plated by a Tyler Van Pelt single.

Cole Barr made it 3-0 for Indiana with a solo homer in the second.

Canisius cut the lead to two in the visiting half of the second, as junior Andy Leader and senior Conner Morro walked, while junior Jacob Victor brought Leader in to score with a single.

The Hoosiers put up an eight-spot in the bottom of the third, as Ryan Fineman drove in two with a double, and came across home himself on a wild pitch before Van Pelt scored on a Grant Richardson single. The game broke open when Ashley connected on a grand slam that gave IU an 11-1 advantage.

Fineman extended the game to 12-1, with a solo shot in the sixth, his third home run of the series.

Saalfrank earned the win for Indiana with his seven innings of one-run, five-hit ball. Cal Krueger pitched the final two frames, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Canisius sophomore Zach Chivers was on the losing end of the decision, giving up three runs in two frames. Junior Will Frank followed Chivers, allowing eight runs in 0.2 innings on the hill. Junior Kyle Warner provided some length, going 3.1 innings and allowing his only run on the Fineman homer. Going two innings, junior Carson Perkins struck out two Hoosiers and plunked another.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
""Today's game was another day where we put ourselves in a big hole early.

"We need to take away from the series that - when we attack on the mound and take care of business defensively - we will put ourselves in a position to be successful. By now, there are not many types of arms we haven't faced at this point in the year, so the goal is that our group as a whole is taking notes and using early experience to make us better in the future."

Game Notes
• This was the fifth all-time meeting between Canisius and Indiana, as the Hoosiers hold the series edge at 5-0.
• Morro's second-inning walk extended his on-base streak to 27 games, continuing a streak that began May 17, 2018 against Marist.
• Sunday marked the first career starts for Chivers and redshirt-freshman second baseman Mike Mazzara.
• This was Vincent's first multi-hit game of his career.
• Redshirt-freshman Cole Hollins ended the weekend by recording at least one hit all three of his games played.
