Softball Drops Two on Second Day in Wilmington

Wilmington, N.C. -  The Canisius softball team was defeated by Eastern Kentucky and Youngstown State, 12-4 and 4-0 respectively, on the second day of the UNCW Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. The Blue and Gold fall to 1-14 on the season as Eastern Kentucky and Youngstown State improve to 11-9 and 4-15. 

GAME 14
Canisius trailed Eastern Kentucky 7-0 going into the fourth inning, but Canisius redshirt-junior Lauren Castro hit an RBI single up the middle to plate senior Denver Keller and freshman Lily Wozniak, putting the Griffs on the board with two runs. Castro returned to the plate in the sixth inning and blasted a shot over the center-field fence to push across two more runs. Eastern Kentucky closed out its scoring in the visiting half of the seventh when Sammi Miller sent a three-run double to deep the left-center gap, giving Eastern Kentucky the 12-4 victory.

Canisius had six hits in the defeat with Keller, sophomore Erin Hufford, junior Sue Vi and senior Molly McGuire each recording a base knock.

Castro earned the loss for the Griffs as she went 6.1 innings, surrendering 11 runs on 10 hits. Senior Molly Hennessy took over in the seventh inning and allowed two hits. 

GAME 15
Canisius trailed Youngstown State, 2-0, going into the third inning, but a Nikki Saibene single in the bottom-half of the frame drove in two and gave Youngstown State the 4-0 victory.
 
Sophomore pitcher Emily Nicosia (1-4) took the loss for Canisius after she allowed four runs on seven hits to go along with one strikeout and two walks in three innings of work. Freshman Hayley Tamaro then entered the circle for the Griffs in the fourth inning and was able to record two strikeouts, while allowing just two hits. 

Inside the Box Score
• The Griffs recorded 10 hits in the two games on Saturday.
• Paradowski is now 16-for-16 on stolen base attempts.
• Castro's homerun in the loss to Eastern Kentucky is her third of the season and 12th of her career.
