Softball Tops Youngstown State on Friday

The Canisius softball team started out its weekend trip to Wilmington, N.C., with a split on Friday. The Golden Griffins (1-12) started the first day of the UNCW Invitational with their first victory of the season, 2-1, over Youngstown State in eight innings, before falling to the host UNCW, 7-2, in the afternoon matchup.

GAME 12
In the first game, the score remained 0-0 until the Griffs took the lead in the top-half of the eighth inning. Sophomore Kara Paradowski hit a single into left field that scored Sue Vi, who was put on second base to start the extra inning. Paradowski then stole home to put Canisius up, 2-0. Youngstown State tallied its only run in the home-half of the extra inning thanks to Maddi Lusk's RBI single, but it wasn't enough as Canisius notched the win, 2-1. 

Canisius tallied three base hits in the game one victory. Sophomore Emily Nicosia earned the win in the circle after she allowed one run on five hits in eight innings of work.

GAME 13
In the second game, The Griffs struck first as they scored one run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Hannah-Catallo Stooks grounded out to the shortstop that allowed sophomore Erin Hufford to score. The Seahawks tied things up in the third after Jada Santiago hit an RBI single up the middle. 
 
The score remained 1-1 until the top-half of the fourth, when junior Brittany Sockwell hit a double to deep left and senior Denver Keller put down a sac bunt to move Sockwell to third. Junior Ashley Barnett stepped into the box and hit a hard ball back to the pitcher, scoring Sockwell to make it 2-1.
 
UNCW came back in the home-half of the fourth when Hannah Adamczyk hit a double to right and plated Gabriella Hessenthaler to tie it up. UNCW then took the lead in the fifth, when Dominique Travers recorded an three-RBI triple to put UNCW up, 5-2. The home team tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to secure the 7-2 win.

Freshman Hayley Tamaro took the loss in game two for the Blue and Gold after she allowed three runs on three hits to go with a walk and one strikeout in three innings of work. Fellow freshman Alexis Churchill also made an appearance in the circle and she allowed four runs on five hits while fanning three. Nicosia returned to the circle to close the game for the Griffs, as the sophomore allowed one hit and one walk. 

Inside the Box Score
• The Griffs tallied six base swipes on the first day in Wilmington. 
• Paradowski leads the team in stolen bases with 13. 
• Senior Destiny Holani recorded her first multi-hit game of the season with two against UNCW.

Up Next
Canisius will play a pair of games on Saturday, March 16, starting at 3 p.m. EST, withj game one against Eastern Kentucky. The Blue and Gold will close out the second day at 5:30 p.m. EST, when the team plays Youngstown State again.
