Indiana’s Offense Downs Baseball in Series Opener

Game Recap
Despite junior Jake Burlingame going 3-for-4 at the top of the order, the Canisius baseball team was defeated by Indiana, 18-6, Friday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Ind.

The win improved the Hoosiers to 8-8 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 4-11 in 2019.

Canisius was the first team to score, with senior Conner Morro coming across the plate on a single by redshirt-junior William Krull in the top of the first.

Indiana loudly opened up the bottom of the first with six runs, as Matt Gorski scored the tying run on a Canisius fielding error before three-straight hit-by-pitches to Cole Barr, Tyler Van Pelt and Ryan Fineman plated two more runs. Grant Richardson then singled to score Barr for the fourth IU run, forcing Canisius junior Jarod Burmaster from the game. Jeremy Houston drove in the fifth run on a sacrifice fly, while Richardson scored on a double steal for the final run of the frame.

The Griffs closed the gap in the fourth, as redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan followed junior Stephen Bennett's triple with a single, and Steffan came around for the Griffs' second run on a Kyle Kush single. Morro later plated junior Andy Leader when Indiana committed a throwing error, and Kush scored the fifth Canisius run on a fielder's choice by junior Jacob Victor.

Indiana re-opened the gap to five later in the fourth, as Barr drove in Matt Lloyd off a double to start a four-run frame. Sam Crail scored Barr with a single, Houston's single plated Fineman and Gorski doubled in Crail for the other three runs.

The Hoosiers added more insurance in the fifth, as Fineman hit a two-run home run, while Richardson followed with a double and Crail singled to bring in Richardson.

Jake Skrine kicked off a five-run sixth inning for Indiana when he doubled in Gorski. Fineman continued the inning when he tallied a two-RBI single, and Richardson knocked a two-run homer to extend the lead to 18-5.

Canisius added one more run in the ninth when Morro tripled to bring Leader home and move the score to 18-6.

Indiana starter Pauly Milto got his fourth win of the season, scattering eight hits over six innings and allowing five runs, four being earned. Braden Scott pitched two no-hit innings after Milto, and Brad Busald finished with one run in one inning.

For Canisius, Burmaster gave up six runs, three earned, without recording an out to be handed the loss. Senior Andrew Sipowicz lasted 4.2 innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits, while junior Kyle Warner allowed five runs over 1.1 innings. Freshman Brett Kochanski and redshirt-freshman Nick DeBrino both pitched a scoreless inning apiece.

For the Hoosiers, Gorski led the way with four hits, including two doubles, and Fineman drove in five runs on three hits. Canisius saw Bennett notch two hits, while Morro registered two RBI and Leader scored twice.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Overall we failed to execute defensively early on and opened up in a hole. We fought back with competitive at-bats but then failed to get the stops we needed to continue to fight back.  When you put up a crooked number and then give up a crooked number immediately after, it makes things tough."

Game Notes
• This was the second all-time meeting between Canisius and Indiana, with the Hoosiers leading the series 2-0.
• Friday marked the collegiate debut of DeBrino, as the right-handed pitcher allowed one hit and one walk in one inning, striking out three.
• Morro's ninth-inning triple extended his on-base streak to 24 games, continuing a streak that began May 17, 2018 against Marist.
• Morro recorded a multi-RBI game for just the second time this season.
• Bennett's three-bagger gives him a MAAC-leading three triples on the season, and Canisius a conference-best nine triples in 2019.
• Kush's RBI in the fourth inning marked the first of his collegiate career.
• Burlingame's three hits matched a career high, previously doing so at Iona on April 14, 2018.
• The 18 runs allowed is the most by Canisius since a 18-15 loss in 11 innings to Binghamton on April 8, 2015.
• Friday was the first time all season the Griffs did not draw a single walk.
