Softball Falls Twice on Final Day of Colonial Classic

The Canisius softball team went 0-2 Sunday to close out its appearance in the Colonial Classic in Washington, D.C. The Golden Griffins started the day with an 9-5 loss to Cornell before falling to the host Colonials, 13-5 (5 innings), in the afternoon matchup.

Game 10
Cornell (1-7) led 4-0 after two innings of play thanks to an RBI single from Bridgette Rooney and a run-scoring single off the bat of Allison Kerce. The score remained 4-0 in favor of Cornell until the top of the fourth, when the Big Red tallied another run courtesy of a Kerce sacrifice fly to left.
 
Canisius answered in the home half of the fifth with three runs to trim the deficit to two. Junior Sue Vi began the sequence with a single to third base before a single from sophomore Erin Hufford and a walk from sophomore Kara Paradowski loaded the bases. Senior Molly McGuire drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Hufford for the first run before fellow senior Denver Keller ripped an RBI double down the left line, scoring Paradowski and Catallo-Stooks to cut Cornell's lead to 5-3. 

Junior Morgan Altman started the sixth inning with a double through the left side before Hufford followed up with a single to bring home Altman and pull the the Griffs within one, 6-5. Cornell added to its lead scoring three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to determine the 9-5 final. 
 
Sophomore Emily Nicosia (0-3) took the loss in the circle for Canisius as she allowed five runs on five hits to go with three strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Shealyn Ollison threw 3.2 innings for Canisius in relief and allowed four runs on five hits to go with one strikeout.

Game 11
In the second game of the day, George Washington (17-3) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning due to a bases loaded walk and a throwing error made by the Canisius infieldThe Blue and Gold answered in the third inning with an RBI single off the bat of Catallo-Stooks to make it a three-run contest.

The host Colonials added to their lead in the home half of the frame thanks to a Priscilla Martinez two-run homer and an Alessandra Ponce double, which extended the George Washington lead to 8-1. 
 
The fourth proved to be a big inning for the Blue and Gold as junior Brittany Sockwell got things started with a two-run homer over the left-field fence. Fellow Griffs Altman and Hufford helped the effort, each recording an RBI single to center to make it 8-5. George Washington secured the win in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits for a final score of 13-5. 
 
Freshman Hayley Tamaro (0-2) took the loss for Canisius in game two, allowing six runs on two hits to go along with three walks. Redshirt junior Lauren Castro closed out the game for Canisius as she allowed seven runs on eight hits while fanning one.

Inside the Box Score
• This was the sixth all-time game between Canisius and George Washington, with the Colonials leading the series 4-2.
• Six Griffs tabbed a hit in the first game, led by Hufford and Keller, who finished with two hits apiece.
• Canisius pounded out a total of 16 hits in the final two games of the Colonial Classic.
• Paradowski stretched her team lead in stolen bases to 10 with a stolen base on Sunday while Sockwell increased her squad-leading RBI total to eight.

• Canisius travels to the Tar Heel State next weekend to take part in the UNCW Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. 
• The Blue and Gold are scheduled to play five games at the three-day tournament, starting with a pair of contests against Youngstown State (10 a.m.) and the host Seahawks (3 p.m.) on March 15.
