Comeback Bid Comes Up Short as Hockey Falls at Bentley

Canisius scored three unanswered goals to pull within one in the third period, but Bentley held on to record a 6-4 victory over the Golden Griffins in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Six different players all found the back of the net for the Falcons (14-11-3, 13-7-2 AHA), who won their seventh straight contest to extend the nations-longest active unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Sophomores Austin Alger and Matt Long and freshmen David Baskerville and J.D. Pogue accounted for the four goals scored by Canisius (9-17-3, 6-15-2 AHA).

Trailing by a 5-1 margin near the midway point of the contest, Baskerville started the Griffs comeback bid with his first collegiate tally at the 9:06 mark of the second when he deflected senior Alex Jaeckle's point shot past Bentley goaltender Aidan Pelino from the middle of the slot.

Alger pulled Canisius within two, 5-3, with a power-play goal at the 4:33 mark of the third, placing a wrist shot over the glove of Pelino from the bottom of the right faceoff circle for his 11th of the season.

Pogue brought the Griffs within one nearly four minutes later, using a feed from senior Dylan McLaughlin to get behind the Bentley defense before sling the puck under Pelino to make it a 5-4 contest.

That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as Jakov Novak recorded a power-play goal with 1:31 remaining to restore Bentley's two-goal cushion and send the Falcons to their 14th victory of the season.

Earlier in the contest, Bentley jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 66 seconds into the game on Will Garin's fourth of the campaign.

Long answered for the Griffs at the 7:35 mark of the opening frame, putting home a rebound on a shot from Baskerville to knot the score at 1-1.

Brendan Hamblet restored the Falcons advantage just before the 12-minute mark of the first with an even-strength tally before Bentley exploded for three goals in the opening eight minutes of the second to build a 5-1 cushion.

Ryner Gorowsky began the sequence just 52 seconds into the middle frame, finishing off a 2-on-1 break while Tanner Jago stretched the lead to 4-1 just past the five-minute mark with his seventh of the campaign.

Jonathan Desbiens closed out the barrage with a power-play tally less than three minutes later, providing the setting for Canisius comeback attempt.

Pelino finished with 14 saves for Bentley. Ladd got the start for Canisius and made 15 saves before being replacing by junior Blake Weyrick, who recorded 12 stops.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"We got down by a bunch early. It's hard to talk about bad bounces, but there were a couple of them that found a way into our net. Loved the resiliency from our group going into a third period down 5-2 and getting back into a game, making it 5-4. It was a good push for us, but again it's the same story of needing to play better.

"We relied upon Matt Long, J.D. Pogue and David Baskerville tonight. They were awesome with each of them providing a goal. I Could not be prouder of their effort and what they brought to the game tonight. We need that effort, that skating and that heart from all of our lines and tonight we got it in the highest level from them.

"In the first two periods they out-worked us, period. There was no hiding that. Anytime you get out-worked by an opponent, if you think you're going to generate offense, including shots on net, you're mistaken. If you get out-worked, if they're harder than you, if they pass the puck better than you and play inside you for 40 minutes, you're going to find yourself down 5-2. That's what happens against any team. If we can play harder and out-work an opponent, I really like our chances. But the fact that we did that for just the last 20 minutes is not enough from our team to have a good recipe for success."
