Hockey Posts 1-1 Draw Versus Mercyhurst

Junior Casey Jerry scored his second goal of the season and junior Blake Weyrick made 22 saves to pace Canisius in a 1-1 tie versus Mercyhurst In Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

After a scoreless first period, Jerry staked the Golden Griffins (9-15-3, 6-13-2 AHA) to a 1-0 lead at the 13:42 mark of the second period, deflecting a point shot from sophomore Logan Gestro past Mercyhurst keeper Colin DeAugustine for his second of the campaign.

The Lakers (13-14-4, 11-9-3 AHA) tied the game just before the second intermission as Trevor Best buried a feed from Dalton Hunter from close range to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the third.

Canisius appeared to have scored the go-ahead goal with less than four minutes to play in regulation when a Mercyhurst clearing attempt deflected off of Jerry and into the Mercyhurst net, but the goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference.

DeAugustine finished the game with 36 saves between the pipes for Mercyhurst.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I really liked the way we played tonight. It was a step in the right direction for us. I felt we had a similar game last night. I like the way we're playing. Our discipline was good. We were hard to play against. We need to try to find a way to generate more goals. That's the only thing that we need to do a better job of.

The first two periods we took it to them. They came out with a push in the third. You always have to weather a storm in a game. There are always moments where the opponent is going to control the pace of play. They were buzzing around for a couple of minutes, but I liked how we weathered that storm. After we did that, we pushed hard and got some good opportunities. We had some bad luck on a disallowed goal. Maybe we deserved a better outcome, but its where we're at. You play a game, you learn and you move on."
