Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late Push Not Enough as Men’s Lacrosse Falls at Furman

Furman used a big third quarter to take control of the contest and held off a fourth-quarter rally from Canisius to record a 12-10 victory in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at Paladin Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

Jarrett Birch recorded three goals and added an assist while John Holcomb pitched in one goal and dished out three helpers for the Paladins (1-3). Alex Van de Bovenkamp finished with 13 saves between the pipes for Furman.

Freshman Jacob Buck tallied a game-high four goals and junior Carter Stefaniak chipped in two goals and an assist to pace the Golden Griffins (1-2). Junior Daniel Balawejder was 16-of-26 at the faceoff X while senior keeper Brad Nordstrom recorded double-digit saves for the third straight contest as he finished with 14 stops.

Trailing 5-3 at the start of the third quarter, Stefaniak scored 81 seconds into the frame to get Canisius within one, but Birch answered just 39 seconds later for Furman to ignite a stretch that saw the Paladins use goals from five different players to close out the quarter on a 5-1 run and take a 10-5 advantage into the fourth.

Canisius made a push of its own in the final frame as Buck and fellow freshman Mark Allen struck just eight seconds apart in the opening minute to pull the Griffs within three, 10-7.

Birch completed his hat trick a little more than two minutes later to temporarily halt the Griffs momentum, but Buck and junior Mathieu Boissonneault combined for consecutive strikes to make it an 11-9 contest with less than six minutes remaining.

Dougie McCoy answered for Furman just 14 seconds after Boissonneault's tally to push the Paladins lead back to three. Buck would get the Griffs within two for a second time in the frame with a little more than four minutes to play, but that would be as close as Canisius would get as Furman held on for its first victory of the season.

Earlier in the contest, Leonard and Williamson both found the back of the net in the opening 4:23 of the first quarter to give the Paladins an early 2-0 advantage.

Buck got Canisius on the board with 3:29 to play in the opening frame to trim the Griffs' deficit in half, but Holcomb restored Furman's two-goal cushion less than a minute later to make it a 3-1 contest after one.

Seniors Layne Collins and Mario Caito opened the second-quarter scoring to bring Canisius level at 3-3, but Birch and Erickson responded with a pair of tallies less than a minute apart midway through the stanza to put Furman back in front by two at the break.
