Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Rallies for 13-10 Victory over Mercer

Canisius scored six times in the fourth quarter to erase a two-goal deficit and defeat Mercer, 13-10, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at Five Star Stadium in Macon, Ga.

Junior Mathieu Boissonneault tallied five goals while freshman Jacob Buck added three goals and two assists and junior Carter Stefaniak added four points (2g, 2a) for the Golden Griffins (1-1).

Defensively, senior goalkeeper Brad Nordstrom continued his solid start to the 2019 season, recording double-digit saves for the second straight contest as he made 14 stops. Junior defender Holden Garlent established a school record with six caused turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls to go along with an assist.

Pascal Coombs and John Tarver tallied two goals apiece, and Sean Goldsmith pitched in a goal and two assists, to pace the Bears (0-3).

Down 9-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, Boissonneault started the Canisius comeback just 35 seconds into the final frame as he netted his fourth of the contest to bring the Griffs within one. Canisius continued to pressure and were rewarded a few minutes later with goals from Buck and senior Mario Caito less than 100 seconds apart gave the Griffs their first lead of the game, 10-9, with 7:14 remaining.

Mikey Ewing brought Mercer level just six seconds after Caito's goal, but Buck restored the Griffs' lead moments later by completing his hat trick with 6:31 on the clock to put the Griffs in front, 11-10.

Stefaniak doubled the Canisius cushion a little less than two minutes after Buck's go-ahead goal. Boissonneault closed out the scoring with just over two minutes remaining to send the Griffs to their first victory of the season.

Mercer tallied three goals in the opening 7:28 of the contest to build an early 3-0 cushion, but Boissonneault had an answer for Canisius, recording three unanswered goals of his own, highlighted by a pair of tallies just 32 seconds apart, to level the score early in the second quarter.

The Bears regained control moments later on a goal from John Tarver just 11 ticks after Boissonneault's equalizer, sparking a 3-1 spurt that closed out the first half and gave Mercer at 6-4 edge at intermission.

Trailing 7-4 at the midway point of the third quarter, sophomore Ryan Cicci, Buck and Stefaniak all found the back of the net in a four-plus minute span to tie the game at 7-7. Mercer once again responded, scoring twice in the final 2:45 of the frame to carry a 9-7 advantage into the fourth and set the stage for Canisius' fourth-quarter comeback.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"After a slow start today, we were able to regroup and refocus on doing things that, in the past, have made us successful. By simplifying our game plan, we were able to execute and continue to hustle and grind our way to a victory.

"We had a lot of big plays by guys selling out, whether they played one shift or a lot of them. Jonathan Phillips in particular, came up with a big play for us on the wing during his only shift of the game that got us possession. That type of effort was what we needed to today. I'm very proud of this effort and we look forward to playing Furman on Tuesday."
