Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Blanks Air Force to Earn Split

Senior Dylan McLaughlin scored two goals and freshman goaltender Matt Ladd stopped all 39 shots he faced to pace Canisius in a 3-0 victory over Air Force in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at Cadet Ice Arena at the United States Air Force Academy.

McLaughlin scored twice in the third period to provide insurance for the Golden Griffins (10-18-3, 7-16-2 AHA) after senior Felix Chamberland opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first.

That would be all the support that Ladd would need as he earned his first career shutout by keeping the Falcons (14-12-4, 12-9-3 AHA) off the scoreboard despite Air Force out-shooting Canisius by a 39-20 margin for the contest.

Chamberland staked the Griffs to a 1-0 lead just 5:23 into the first, redirecting a pass from fellow senior Cameron Heath past Air Force goaltender Billy Christopoulos from the middle of the slot for his third of the season.

Air Force appeared to tie the game late in the first period after Kieran Durgan put home his own rebound during a breakaway opportunity, but the goal was disallowed off due to goaltender interference.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Canisius until the 12:16 mark of the third, when McLaughlin wired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Christopoulos during a 5-on-3 power play to give the Griffs a 2-0 cushion.

McLaughlin closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 34 seconds remaining.

Christopoulos finished with 17 saves between the pipes for the Falcons.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a team win tonight. We deserved it. I couldn't be happier with the effort from everybody. It took all of us. Everybody had a big play during the course of the game.

"We did a better job of spreading them out (on the power play), making them come out and get us. We've been working hard on the power play to get better, to find lanes, to find opportunities to attack. Both units were sharp tonight. They managed the puck well. They limited risk and attacked when it was the right time.

"(Matt Ladd) was great tonight. I'm glad he got the shutout. He deserves all the accolades that he should get from that game. He performed really well. There was a huge save in the second period where it looks like they were going to have a tap-in goal and he just had extreme effort to make sure that no puck was going to get by him tonight on that play and others. We're very happy for Matt. I know the team is excited for him. He'll give the credit to his teammates, that what our guys do, but we're all really excited for him."
