Hunt Pitches Baseball to 8-3 Victory over N.C. Central

Recap:
The Canisius baseball team picked up its first win of the 2019 season, as North Carolina Central fell to the Golden Griffins, 8-3, Saturday evening at Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

Senior southpaw Nolan Hunt was the highlight of the game, taking over in the third inning and spinning seven strikeouts over five shutout innings, allowing just two hits to earn the victory.

Junior Andy Leader provided offense out of the leadoff spot in his Canisius debut, as the junior-college transfer recorded a double and drove in three runs, while junior Jacob Victor accounted for three of the Griffs' runs scored, registering a double, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

Just like the day before, the Griffs put runners on first and second in the top of the first inning but were unable to capitalize. In the bottom half of the opening frame, N.C. Central led off with a Carter Williams walk. Williams then stole second, allowing Corey Joyce to drive him in on a double into left field. After a Trey Maslin walk and a throwing error by redshirt-junior catcher William Krull scored Joyce, Mitchell McCrary drew four balls while Myles Coston singled. With the bases loaded, Timmy Fischvogt walked to score Maslin, making it 3-0 Eagles.

The Blue and Gold would answer back in the third, as the designated hitter Victor was hit by a pitch and junior centerfielder Jake Burlingame followed with a single. After two fly-outs to the left-fielder, Leader ripped a double down the left-field line and drove in both runners to close the gap to 3-2.

NCCU would put Williams in scoring position again in the fourth, as the Eagles leftfielder would get to third after a walk, passed ball and groundout. The Griffs tagged Williams out at home, though, as he attempted to take home on the throw when Josh Brammell stole second. Hunt then ended his first inning of work by getting Vinny Bailey to fly out.

In the fifth, Canisius again found themselves with two runners on after senior shortstop Conner Morro drew the two-out walk and senior rightfielder Mark McKenna singled. N.C. Central turned to Tom Guglielmello, who struck out junior third baseman Stephen Bennett to end the rally.

The Griffs would get another chance in sixth, as Krull was plunked to lead off and Victor followed with a walk. Burlingame then reached base after Fischvogt threw the ball away on a sacrifice attempt, allowing Krull to score and knot it up at 3-3. Burlingame then swiped second, putting two runners in scoring position. Redshirt-freshman Cole Hollins would then pinch-hit for freshman Kyle Kush, scoring Victor for the go-ahead run. After a NCCU pitching change, Leader drove in Burlingame when the Eagles shortstop committed an error. A walk by Morro and a McKenna fielder's choice plated Hollins, extending the lead to 6-3.

The seventh saw Victor add to the lead, as the junior doubled with one out and eventually came around to score thanks to two wild pitches sandwiching a Mike Steffan walk. Hunt did his part on the mound after loading the bases to start the bottom half of the inning. The left-hander punched out the next two hitters swinging before getting pinch-hitter Caleb Coyle to ground into a fielder's choice to end the frame.

Canisius would tack on its eighth run in the ninth, as Bennett led off with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a groundout before scoring on an error by the Eagles first baseman.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hunt was relieved by junior righty Jarod Burmaster, who went 1-2-3 through the Eagles to close out the Griffs' first victory of the season.

Guglielmello suffered the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) over 0.2 innings, while Eagles starter Chris Krennrich gave up two earned runs and five hits while striking out five, going 4.2 innings. Senior Andrew Kneussle got the start for Canisius, as the right-hander allowed three earned runs in three innings, surrendering two hits and eight walks to NCCU.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments:
"It is always a good feeling to get the first win of the year. It sets the tone and gives the team a taste of what to strive for each time out.

"Hunt was great for us. We needed our bullpen to pick us up and Nolan did an outstanding job of giving us a chance to get back in the game and he came up really big when he had to. It was fun to watch.

"Leader and Victor provided a great spark. It was good to see Andy step up in his first game with us, he is an energy giver and he supplied that today. Victor put together better at-bats for us today but really stood out with some heads-up baserunning."

Game Notes:
• Kush made his Canisius debut as well on Saturday by starting the game at second base. Freshman Dylan Vincent also debuted for Canisius, pinch-hitting for Victor in the ninth.
• Burmaster's debut saw him record two strikeouts in his one inning on the mound.
• Morro extended his hit streak to eight games, as the shortstop collected a first-inning single to maintain his streak that dates back to May 24, 2018 against Niagara.
• Burlingame's two steals are the first multi-steal game of his career.
• Victor's three runs scored are a career high, and his double is the first as a Griff.
• This was Bennett's first multi-hit game since three hits at St. Bonaventure on May 6, 2018.
• The last time Hunt pitched five or more shutout innings was April 16, 2016 at Rider, allowing two singles over six frames.
• The Griffs' 12 walks allowed Friday are the most since Canisius allowed 14 walks in a 5-3 win against Fairfield on March 24, 2018.
• The all-time series between the two ballclubs is now 2-1 in favor of Canisius.

Next Game:
Canisius and N.C. Central will play the rubber-match of the series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 11 a.m. (new start time) from Durham Athletic Park. Probable starting pitchers are sophomore left-hander Jeff DeStefano and junior righty Brendan Bell.
