Five Things to Know Before Canisius Meets Mercer for the First Time

1) Canisius Continues Season-Opening Road Swing
• The Golden Griffins continue their season-opening road swing Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Southern Conference opponent Mercer. Canisius concludes its three-game trek Feb. 19 with a 7 p.m. matchup against SoCon member Furman.

2) Pleased to Meet You
• Saturday's contest serves as the first meeting between Canisius and Mercer. The matchup is the first for the Griffs against a new opponent since taking on Cleveland State during the Vikings' inaugural season of competition in 2017.

3) Looking to Get into the Win Column
• Both Canisius and Mercer will look to Saturday's matchup as an opportunity to pick up their first wins of the young season. The Griffs stand at 0-1 following a 21-12 setback to Hobart in its season opener last Saturday. The Bears, meanwhile, find themselves at 0-2 in 2019 after a 20-9 defeat at No. 14 North Carolina on Feb. 2 and a 13-9 loss at Utah on Feb. 9.

4) A Balanced Attack
• Canisius featured a balanced attack in its season-opening contest against Hobart as five players – juniors Mathieu Boissonneault and Carter Stefaniak, sophomore Ryan Cicci and freshmen Jacob Buck and Isaiah Ricketts – all chipped in two goals each to account for 10 of the Griffs' 12 goals. Boissonneault, Buck and Stefaniak all added an assist in the matchup with the Statesmen to share team-high honors with three points apiece.

5) Nordstrom Solid in Debut
• Senior goalkeeper Brad Nordstrom was solid in his debut between the pipes for Canisius as the graduate transfer from Fairfield turned aside 15 shots in the Griffs' season-opening contest against Hobart. With his performance, Nordstrom became the first Canisius keeper to record 15 or more saves in a game since Alex Govenettio made 18 stops at Cornell on April 7, 2015.
