Volleyball Upended by Siena in Five Sets

The Canisius volleyball team dropped its second-straight match on Saturday afternoon, falling in five sets to Siena at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Griffins were able to secure the first and third sets, but the Saints won the second and fourth sets to force the deciding set, where the visitors edged out the Griffs in the fifth frame (22-25, 25-23, 25-26, 25-23, 15-13).

The Blue and Gold fall to 12-15 overall and 9-6 in MAAC play, while Siena moved to 10-15 on the season and 5-9 in conference action.

Canisius sophomore Hannah Nelson powered down 14 kills to go with four service aces and nine digs. Following Nelson were fellow sophomore Camila Vazquez with 11 kills and senior Leah Simmons with 10, as Simmons and Vazquez also notched eight and six total blocks, respectively. Senior Cassidy Ceriani tallied 20 assists in the match to pace the Griffs, while sophomore Ashley Kekeisen registered a double-double off of 16 assists and 12 digs. On the defensive end, freshman libero Bree Long posted a match-best 22 digs on top of five assists and an ace.

For Siena, Abby Huffman led the match with 16 kills in addition to five blocks and Isabella Ultsch was right behind her with 15 kills, while Maria Llinas posted 49 assists and 14 digs.

The opening set saw Canisius pull out to a 20-10 lead, but an 11-2 streak by Siena brought the score within one at 22-21. A kill from Nelson and Long's ace brought up set point, allowing Canisius to close out the first set off a Siena attack error. In the second set, the two teams exchanged points to sit tied 15 times during the frame, but an Ultsch kill at 23-23 followed by a Ceriani error let Siena even the match.

A 6-0 run by the Griffs early in the third set was followed by a 5-0 surge later on, as Canisius cruised to a 25-16 victory in the third stanza.

Siena responded by taking the fourth set with a score of 25-23. Despite fighting from behind the entire final set to bring the score even at 13-13, Canisius could not complete the comeback as Siena got consecutive kills from Huffman and Kelly Chaney to finish off the set and the match.
