Slow Start Dooms Hockey at Robert Morris

Robert Morris raced out to an early lead and held off a third-period rally from Canisius to post a 4-2 victory in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at Colonials Arena in Pittsburgh.

Playing the second half of a home-and-home series, the Colonials (5-4-0, 5-1-0 AHA) tallied three goals in the opening 6:23 of the contest and built a 4-0 advantage after two periods before the Golden Griffins scored twice in the third (1-6-0, 0-2-0 AHA) to challenge them down the stretch.

Grant Hebert recorded two goals while Brendon Michaelian and Luke Lynch added single tallies for RMU. Junior Matt Long and sophomore J.D. Pogue accounted for the two Canisius markers.

Robert Morris took control of the contest before the game was seven minutes old, striking for three goals in a 2:44 span to build an early advantage.

Hebert opened the scoring at the 3:39 mark of the contest, tapping home a backdoor feed from Jacob Coleman for his second of the season.

The Colonials then scored twice in a 23-second span less than three minutes later to build aa multi-goal cushion.

Michaelian began the sequence with his second goal of the weekend, firing a wrist shot from the point that found the top right-hand corner of the net at the six-minute mark of the opening frame to make it a 2-0 before Herbert picked up his second of the period on the next shift when his centering feed deflected off a Canisius player and into the cage.

Lynch expanded the Colonials advantage to 4-0 at the 14:36 mark of the second period, firing a slap shot from the top of the left face-off circle that Canisius keeper Jacob Barczewski was able to get a piece of, but was unable to keep out of the cage.

Long got the Griffs on the board just before the 11-minute mark of the third, driving to the net and putting home a shot from just off the right post to make it a 4-1 game.

Pogue followed with his second of the season less than two minutes later, beating Colonials goaltender Justin Kapelmaster with a shorthanded bid from the right face-off circle to pull the Griffs within two.

That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as the Colonials held the Griffs off the scoreboard the rest of the way to earn the victory and complete the sweep.

Kapelmaster recorded 36 saves in goal for Robert Morris. Barczewski turned aside 30 shots between the pipes for Canisius.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Obviously down 3-0 early in the first period, adversity hit us pretty early in the game tonight. We were flat. Nobody was sharp. Robert Morris getting those three goals in the opening six minutes makes it hard to climb back into the game. Something we do, we scrap and claw in the third period to try and get back into the game, but it's not good enough for us to compete for 60 minutes right now and that's something we need to address quickly.

"We were hopeful that some guys that didn't play last night would give us a boost tonight. We also have some players coming back from some injuries that are getting their first opportunities to play this weekend. Goaltending is a little inconsistent right now. I believe in all of our goalies and that will get figured out, but right now we're learning and fighting for consistency. Everybody travels. It's not an excuse for us. Doesn't matter who we play or when we play. We need to put a whole 60 minutes together. If we can do that, we can get some momentum in the game. Down 4-0 makes it really difficult for any team.

"Matt Long and J.D. Pogue have had really good efforts this season. They're controlling the things they can control: attitude and effort, and they've been tremendous. They're leaders on this team even though they're gaining more ice time this season. They've earned it. Their effort is there. They're getting rewarded for hard plays. Long's goal going to the net is a great individual effort and got us going in the third. J.D. coming down and having a high-end shot to beat a high-end goalie for him is a big positive. He's got a tremendous shot and we're hoping he's going to bring even more offense this season."
