Albany Takes Down Men’s Basketball

Game Recap
A 9-0 run in the late stages of the first half turned a one-point game into a 10-point lead for Albany, and the Great Danes ended the game shooting 56.4 percent from the field en route to a 83-57 victory over Canisius Wednesday night in SEFCU Arena.

The win moves Albany to 1-1 on the season, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

Junior Majesty Brandon led Canisius with 19 points, five rebounds and a steal, while senior Malik Johnson added nine points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. For the game, Canisius shot 34.5 percent from the field, just 17.4 percent from 3-point land and 72.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Albany guards Cameron Healy and Ahmad Clark each had 20 points in the victory for Albany, as the Great Danes ended the night with a 34-24 advantage on the glass. Forward Malachi De Sousa was good for a double-double in the win with 10 points and 10 rebounds, eight of which came off the defensive glass.

Back-to-back steals by Canisius led to four-straight points on buckets by Jalanni White and Brandon to make the score 21-20 in favor of Albany with 5:43 left to play before intermission. However, the Great Danes made their decisive push out of a 30-second timeout moments later, as Albany outscored the Blue and Gold 14-4 over the final 5:15 of the opening half. In that run, Albany got four points from Adam Lulka, while Healy and Clark each drilled a 3-pointer for the home team.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"We never really got settled offensively, and honestly, we got bullied at both ends of the floor tonight. We just need to keep working to find a way to get in a rhythm offense and we really need to lock in and focus on defense."

Game Notes
• Wednesday was the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools. Albany leads the series 4-2, with three of those wins coming in SEFCU Arena.
