Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Blanked by Union in Series Opener

Union used goals from three different players and a 30-save shutout from Darion Hanson to defeat Canisius, 3-0, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at KeyBank Rink at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Colin Schmidt, Zachary Emelifeonwu and Fletcher Fineman accounted for the three Dutchmen (2-7-0) tallies as they picked up their second straight victory.

Senior goaltender Daniel Urbani made 22 saves in his season debut between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (0-4-0).

Schmidt opened the scoring with less than three minutes to play in the first, banging home a rebound attempt from just off the right post for his first collegiate tally.

Emelifeonwu made it a 2-0 game at the 3:33 mark of the second, depositing a feed from Taylor Brierley into the back of the net for his third of the season.

Fineman increased the Union cushion to 3-0 with 2:21 remaining in the middle frame when he put a backhanded effort inside the left post for his first collegiate goal.

That would be all the support that Hanson would need as he kept the Golden Griffins off the scoreboard to post his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"We're a team that's focusing on a few items every week so that we can become experts in those areas. Tonight, there was some growth for our team. There are no moral victories for us; we lost the game. We need to get better if we're going to score more goals and obviously beat an opponent. There's lot to grow from tonight; lots we need to get better at. That's where our team is currently.

"As a staff and as a team we're talking a lot about being ready at the start of games. You have to be ready at every moment. I was really happy with our first period. We were excellent. We competed really hard, we were communicating and talking ourselves through success. That's what an early start looks like for us. It's something for us to build on, but it doesn't get easier. We have a good first period and then Union was much better than us for the first 10 minutes of the second and we need to learn from that and understand that when you have a good period, you haven't earned anything yet. We have to concentrate every moment of every game, that's what we're currently struggling with at times is 60-minute consistency.

"You have to out-recover your opponent. We've been spending time and resources to make sure that all of our players have the resources to recover. Four o'clock games are going to happen to us a lot this season. This is our first attempt at it. It's a situation where you have to out-recover your opponent, start quick and be better tomorrow."
