Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Defeated by No. 18 North Dakota in Season Opener

Dixon Bowen scored two goals and Adam Scheel stopped all 11 shots he faced to lead No. 18 North Dakota to a 5-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.

In the season-opening contest for both programs, Bowen highlighted a potent Fighting Hawks attack that out-shot Canisius by a 40-11 margin. Shane Pinto, Grant Mismash and Gabe Best also found the back of the net for UND.

Pinto staked the Fighting Hawks to a 1-0 lead just 8:15 into the contest when he jammed home a loose puck from in front of the Canisius goal for his first collegiate tally.

Bowen doubled the UND advantage at the 15:08 mark of the second, stuffing home a Jackson Keane backdoor feed from just off the left post.

The Fighting Hawks put the game away early in the third, scoring three times in the opening 8:04 of the final frame to build a five-goal cushion.

Bast began the barrage 4:43 into the third as his centering pass from the right sidewall deflected off a Canisius defender and into the Griffs' goal.

Mismash and Bowen capped the surge moments later with a pair of tallies just 52 seconds apart. Mismash began the sequence at the 7:12 mark when he beat sophomore goaltender Matt Ladd with a shot to the blocker side in transition. Bowen added his second of the contest on the next shift as he slid a loose puck between Ladd's pads and into the Canisius cage.

Ladd got the start in goal for Canisius and made 28 saves before being replaced by freshman Jacob Barczewski in the third. Barczewski recorded seven saves in eight minutes of action.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a hard game. No moral victories in how we want to play. Our effort, how we stayed connected and competitive, was solid tonight. It wasn't enough. We need to find a way to find some more space to break the puck out and get through the neutral zone and find some more offensive zone time and generate more shots on net.

"I was very proud of our penalty kill, we had a huge five-minute kill during the second period when our captain gets a major and they were caught out there for like four minutes straight during it. They were unbelievable. Those are things to build on. The penalty kill was great, but we have to be a lot better if we're going to get the win tomorrow.

"Will Scherer is new to our team; he's a transfer from Brown. He was very effective and solid on the back end for us tonight. He was skating and moving pucks, which was nice to see. Casey Jerry is not a new player, but he has some more energy. I was impressed with Casey tonight as well. Those two gave effort all the time. Our team is always going to give effort. I saw that from everybody tonight, but those two stood out."
