Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Knocks Off No. 13 North Dakota at Harborcenter

Senior Cameron Heath scored the game-winning goal 1:40 into the third period and junior Blake Weyrick made 32 saves to lead Canisius to a 3-1 victory over No. 13 North Dakota In collegiate men's hockey action Friday at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter.

Senior David Parrottino and sophomore Grant Meyer also found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins (7-9-2), who picked up their first win in eight tries against the Fighting Hawks (9-8-1).

Mark Senden recorded the lone goal for North Dakota, who out-shot Canisius by a 33-14 margin in the contest, highlighted by a 17-5 edge in the third. Adam Scheel made 11 saves between the pipes for the Fighting Hawks.

Tied at 1-1 at the start of the third, Heath put the Griffs ahead for good less than two minutes into the frame when he finished off a rush by burying junior Nick Hutchison's feed from the middle of the slot for his third of the season.

North Dakota pushed for the equalizer, but Weyrick stopped all 17 shots on goal he faced and benefitted from a pair of posts on attempts from Senden and Dixon Bowen.

Meyer put the game out of the reach with an empty-net tally with seven seconds remaining to determine the final margin.

Earlier in the contest, Parrottino staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead with a power-play tally with 1:39 to play in the first period, redirecting a pass from senior Dylan McLaughlin between the legs of Scheel for his first of the campaign.

Mark Senden tied the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded tally at the 16:52 mark of the second, jamming home is own rebound for his third of the campaign and setting the stage for Heath's heroics.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Obviously this is a big win for the program. It's also a great win for the Canisius community. It was an electric night and a special moment for our guys. I loved how we played. We played together and hard all night. We were able to handle the late push from them. We were excited to get this win tonight.

"Every game, you're looking to learn. That's something we've been doing all year long. There are some learning experiences that happened tonight in a great team win. We've got to recover quickly and the goal is to beat them again tomorrow. After that, we can then start to look towards building some momentum as we head into the second half of league play."
