Women's Basketball Holds Off Manhattan to Earn Kids Day Win

Game Recap
Canisius (3-9, 1-0 MAAC) opened league play with a 47-44 win over Manhattan Thursday afternoon. Junior transfer D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks scored a game-high 17 points while grabbing five rebounds and three assists in the victory.
 
Along with Patterson-Ricks, senior forward Sara Hinriksdottir tallied 16 points, seven boards and three blocks. Sophomore Danielle Sanderlin collected a game-high 13 caroms in the win. As a group, the Blue and Gold shot 20-of-55 from the floor, a 36.4 percent clip, while just shooting 25.0 percent from the perimeter on 3-of-12 shooting. Canisius out-scored Manhattan 30-14 in the paint, as well as out-rebounding the Jaspers 47-36.
 
Manhattan falls to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in MAAC play following today's loss. The Jaspers sophomore Courtney Warley recorded a team-high 13 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sophomore Lynette Taitt added eight points on 4-of-11 shooting. From the field, Manhattan shot 38.6 percent, making 18-of-63 shot attempts.
 
The Griffs jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the first quarter, with Patterson-Ricks scoring five of the Griffs first 11 points. After the media timeout, Manhattan worked its way back to tie the game, 11-11, after an 8-0 scoring run. Canisius would be held scoreless for 8:56 of the Manhattan run before Sanderlin recorded her lone bucket of the contest, a layup in the lane to give the Griffs a 13-11 lead. The Blue and Gold got its largest lead of the game, 27-14 when Patterson-Ricks capped a 13-3 run with 21 seconds left in the first half.
 
In the second half, Manhattan chipped away at the Griffs lead, getting as close as five points in the third frame, 27-22, the quarter would end with Canisius holding a 37-27 lead. The Jaspers started the fourth with a 9-3 run to pull within four, 40-36. Following the media timeout with the score, 42-38, Patterson-Ricks hit a jump shot near the top of the key with 3:58 left in the game to give the Golden Griffins a 44-38 lead. The score would remain the same for the next 2:54, before Manhattan's Taitt ended the stretch of scoreless basketball with a layup, followed by an empty Griffs possession and another Taitt two-pointer to put the Jaspers within two, 44-42, with just 13 seconds remaining. In the final seconds, Canisius would go to the line four times, making 3-of-4 of its attempts to hold on for the 47-44 win.
 
Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comment
"We have a long way to go, there is a lot for us to work on and get better at. However, we talked about what we needed to do today to get us a chance to win, and that was defend and rebound, I think for the most part we did a pretty good job with that. Offensively, I thought we struggled to find any type of rhythm, I thought we were stagnant a lot, and I couldn't get them to buy into a little more movement and tempo, we are going to have to work on that moving forward."
 
Game Notes
• Thursday afternoon's matchup with Manhattan was the 61st meeting between the two schools, with Canisius now leading the all-time series, 35-26. It also snapped a two-game losing streak to the Jaspers.
• The win was the first on Kids Day since Jan. 15, 2016, when Canisius defeated Saint Peter's, 54-42.
• Hinriksdottir's 16 points marked the fourth time this season and 33rd time in the Keflavik, Iceland, natives' career she scored 15 or more points.
• Sanderlin (13) grabbed 10 plus rebounds for the third time this season and fourth time in her young collegiate career.
