Robert Morris Rolls Past Hockey, 7-2

Robert Morris scored four times in a 5:16 early in the second period to break a 2-2 tie and cruise to a 7-2 victory over Canisius In Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter.

Nick LaLonde, Daniel Mantenuto, Aiden Spellacy and Michael Louria all scored during the second-period spurt for the Colonials (9-13-1, 8-8-1 AHA), who snapped a four-game losing skid with the triumph.

Seniors Cameron Heath and Felix Chamberland scored for the Golden Griffins (8-12-2, 5-10-1 AHA), who dropped their third straight contest.

LaLonde started the game-changing stretch at the 4:39 mark of the second when a pass from a Canisius defensemen deflected off his stick and into the Griffs net.

Mantenuto doubled the Robert Morris advantage to 4-2 with 7:54 elapsed in the middle frame, putting home an Alex Tonge feed from the middle of the slot while the Colonials were on the power play.

Spellacy and Louria capped the Robert Morris outburst with a pair of goals just 46 seconds apart to make it a 6-2 contest. Spellacy began the sequence when he jammed home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble at the 9:09 mark before Louria gave the Colonials a four-goal cushion just seconds before the midway point of the game with a breakaway tally.

Mantenuto closed out the scoring with his second of the evening, tallying a shorthanded goal off the rush at the 4:07 mark of the third.

Earlier in the contest, Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead on the first shift of the contest as Lalonde put home a feed from Nick Prkusic for his fifth of the campaign.

Tonge doubled the Colonials margin to 2-0 with a power-play marker with 8:53 elapsed in the opening frame, putting home a loose puck from just off the left post for his team-leading 10th of the campaign.

Heath got Canisius on the board just past the 12-minute mark of the first when his shot from the left sidewall snuck past Robert Morris keeper Francis Marotte to trim the Griffs deficit to 2-1.

Chamberland leveled the score at 2-2 in the final minute of the frame, putting home a loose puck from the middle of the slot while the Griffs were on the power play.

Marotte finished with 31 saves between the pipes for Robert Morris. Freshman Matt Ladd and junior Blake Weyrick combined to make 29 stops for Canisius.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I really liked our response after Robert Morris took a 2-0 lead in the first. They controlled the first 10 minutes while we controlled the next 10. It felt like the team was ready and focused to begin the second and then it didn't go our way, obviously. They get four unanswered goals and we were unable to respond. We had a couple of bad breaks and a couple selfish plays on our end as we were trying to tie the game right away. I thought we were a little too offensive minded at a time where we needed to weather a storm and we were unable to do it.

"There's really no choice. We have to recover quick, move on from this result as soon as possible. There's no choice. We go against an opponent tomorrow that really took it to us tonight. Nobody's feeling sorry for us. We know that we've got to come together and find a way to fight and scratch and claw. I know our group is committed to that and we get another opportunity tomorrow to respond and get better.
