NCAA Recognizes Five Canisius Teams with APR Awards

Five of Canisius' varsity sports programs have been honored with the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award, the NCAA announced Wednesday.

The five Canisius programs honored on Wednesday are men's cross country, golf, men's swimming and diving, men's track and rowing. The awards are presented each year by the NCAA. To be recognized, a program must rank in the top-10 percent within its sport nationally, according to overall team academic performance during a four-year period. The current period released ended with the 2016-17 academic year.

The golf team has been honored by the NCAA with an APR Public Recognition Award in each of the last seven years, the longest active streak among Canisius athletic teams. The men's cross country team was highlighted by the NCAA for the sixth consecutive year; while the rowing team extended its streak of APR Public Recognition Awards to five straight. The men's swimming and diving program and the College's men's track team have both earned an APR Public Recognition Award in each of the last two years.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. Teams earning Public Recognition Awards on Wednesday increased to 1,284, up by 79 from the previous academic year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports.

APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

Full APR data on all NCAA Division I programs will be released on Wednesday, May 23.
