Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader

DOUBLEHEADER RECAP
WALLINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – Manhattan senior Michael Pfenniger's walk-off scamper home on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning wins game one for Manhattan, 6-5 over Canisius Sunday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.
 
Canisius senior Ryan Stekl kicked-off the scoring in the third frame as he roped a two-run double into right field bringing in senior Liam Wilson and redshirt senior Christ Conley for the game's first two tallies.
 
Manhattan retaliated in the bottom of the same inning as junior Fabian Pena launched a three-run home run over the left field fence, followed by a RBI double by senior Brandon Valls, putting the Jaspers up 4-2 through three innings.
 
In the top the fifth frame, Conley smashed a two-run single to right field bringing in freshman Jacob Martins, and senior John Conti, to knot the game at 4-4.
 
The Jaspers retook the advantage in the home half of the fifth as redshirt senior Evan Brown legged out a fielder's choice allowing Valls to come across for their fifth run.
 
The sixth saw the Griffs tie the game again at 5-5 on a solo shot from Conti to right field.
 
Manhattan manufactured the winning run in the seventh as Pfenninger led off with a single and was bunted over to second base, before advancing to third on a groundout. A few pitches later, the Jaspers second baseman raced home for the sixth, and deciding, run.
 
Redshirt senior right-hander Matt Simonetti went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and four strikeouts on the mound in his start for the Jaspers. Sophomore T.J. Stuart entered out of the bullpen, picking up the victory in 1.1 frames of clean baseball, not allowing a base runner to the four batters he faced.
 
For Canisius, junior right-hander Andrew Sipowicz was ran after 2.2 innings as he surrendering four runs on seven hits, fanning five in the process. Junior left-hander Jared Kennedy and sophomore Will Frank combine for the next two-full innings in relief allowing one hits one run and striking out two. Senior Tyler Smith went the final two frames, scattering three hits in the process.
 
GAME TWO
A 16-hit barrage leads Canisius to the 10-6 game two victory over Manhattan Sunday afternoon. With the doubleheader split, the Golden Griffins sit at 28-20 overall and 13-8 in conference play, as the Jaspers are holding steady at 24-26 and 12-9 in the league.
 
A ground out by senior Nick Capitano in the second inning allowing Lanning to come in, started the scoring, giving the Griffs the early 1-0 lead.
 
Manhattan answered back in the bottom of the same frame with five runs on two hits, two fielder's choices, an error and a bases-loaded walk to hold the 5-1 advantage.
 
The Blue and Gold's big inning came in the top of the fourth as they one-upped the Jaspers with a six spot on two, two-run doubles by Wilson and Stekl, capped off by a two-run bomb by senior Gage Lanning. When the dust cleared, Canisius was back ahead, 7-5.
 
Manhattan chipped away with a RBI single by Pena in the sixth, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Griffs.
 
In the ninth, the Golden Griffins put the contest out of reach as Stekl roped a two-run single back up the middle to plate Conti and Wilson. Lanning added a RBI single of his own to score Conley, putting the game on ice, and pushing Canisius to the 10-6 win.
 
After senior right-hander Charlie Sobieraski only lasted 1.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on only one hit and three walks, junior Andrew Kneussle came in to pick up the pieces, and the win. The Plattsburgh, N.Y. native strung together a solid performance for 4.2 frames, surrendering one run on seven hits. Sophomore Kyle Warner bridged the next 1.1 innings before handing the ball off to Smith for the five-out save.
 
Stuart, who came in in relief in game one, started on the hill for Manhattan in game two, going 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, striking out six in the process. Junior Joe DiNizio threw for the next five frames, surrendering four more runs, fanning five, before sophomore Alexis Calderson saw action for the final out in the top of the ninth.
 
GAME NOTES
• Conley's on-base streak has now reached 10 games.
• Conti's solo home run in game two was the first of his career.
• Stekl's four hits on Sunday gives him 248 hits in his career, moving him past Connor Panas ('15) and into fourth place in program history.
• With six RBI on Sunday, Stekl has now amassed 179 career runs batted in, which is good for second place in school history, moving ahead of Brian Burton ('11).
• Stekl also moves into a tie with Ian Choy ('10) for fourth place all-time in total bases with 360.
• With his two doubles on Sunday, Wilson ties Brett Siddall's ('15) 2015 record for most doubles in a season with 24.
• Game two's 16-hit output ties a season-high for Canisius, with the other occasion occurring versus St. Bonaventure on May 4.
• The 16 hits also are the 23rd time this season that the Blue and Gold have recorded 10-or more hits. Canisius tallied 10-or more hits in 24 contests last season.
• The 10 runs in game two marks the 14th time this year that the Griffs have scored 10-or more runs. Canisius scored 10-or more runs in just eight games last season.
• Smith is back in a tie for saves on the season (9) in the conference with Stuart.
 
UP NEXT                                   
Canisius sits in fourth place in the MAAC heading into the final week of the regular season. The Griffs face the current No. 1 seed in the Marist Red Foxes on May 17-18 to close out the 2018 regular season. Game times for Thursday's doubleheader are set for noon and 3 p.m., with the finale scheduled for noon on Friday. Friday also marks Senior Day for the Blue and Gold's 12 seniors who will be honored.
