Baseball Earns Series Win Over Rider

GAME RECAP
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Sophomore Stephen Bennett's two-run, pinch hit single in the eighth inning propels Canisius past host Rider 5-2 in the rubber match Sunday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawerenceville, N.J.

Junior Conner Morro kicked things off for Canisius with a two-run single in the top of the first inning, driving in seniors Liam Wilson and Ryan Stekl, to take the 2-0 lead.

Rider responded in the fourth with a RBI groundout by junior Riley Mihalik, allowing sophomore Joe Simone to scamper home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Broncs tied the game at two in the home half of the sixth on a RBI single by sophomore Kyle Johnson, bringing in senior Jake Bender.

The score held until Canisius took the lead in the top the eighth when Bennett rocketed his two-run single back up the middle to plate Morro and senior Cyrus Senior. After junior Mark McKenna hit a single of his own, Wilson smashed a double into the left center gap to move the Griffs ahead for good, 5-2.

Right-handed sophomore Will Frank picked-up his second win of the year in 2.1 innings of relief of senior righty Charlie Sobieraski. Frank only allowed one base runner (a walk) as he struck out three of the eight batters he faced. Senior Tyler Smith closed out the game for the eighth time on the campaign as he induced two fly outs and one groundout to secure the 5-2 victory.

Rider junior Zach Gakeler was saddled with the defeat as he allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
