Softball Drops Home Doubleheader

RECAP
The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at home to Monmouth, falling 17-6 in six innings in the opening contest before taking a 9-1 loss in five innings in the afternoon matchup. The wins move the Hawks to 23-11 overall and 13-1 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins fell to 9-30 overall and 5-7 in league games.

GAME ONE RECAP
In the first game, Monmouth took an early lead after Samantha Tomasetti and Kayla Rosado each hit solo home runs in the top of first inning. The Hawks increased their lead to 4-0 when Rosado returned to the plate in the top of the third and to hit an RBI-triple down the third-base line. Freshman Kara Paradowski cut the Monmouth lead in half at 4-2 in the home-half of the third with a single to center that allowed teammate Sue Vi to score. On that play, Paradowski raced around the bases and scored after the Monmouth center fielder misplayed the ball for a three-base error. Later in that frame, sophomore Brittany Sockwell tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run homer to left that alos plated teammate Denver Keller.

Canisius trailed 7-5 in the fifth, but Monmouth took control of the game by scoring six runs in the top of the frame, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Deangie Jimenez to make the score 11-5. Canisius added a run in the fifth when Paradowski drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Hawks tacked on four-more runs in the sixth after Katie Harrington ripped a grand slam over the fence in left.

Junior Molly Hennessy had two hits in the game one loss, including a double. Sockwell went 1-for-2 with a homer, two RBI and two walks, and Keller added a double to the losing cause as well.

Canisius freshman Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle after she allowed 11 runs on 11 hits, while fanning two, in 4.1 innings of work. With the loss, Nicosia moves to 4-11 for the season. Hennessy closed out the game, allowing six runs on four hits to go along with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game, Monmouth took an early 7-0 lead in the third inning highlighted by an RBI-triple by Amber Wozniak. The score would remain 7-0 in favor of Monmouth until the fourth, when Katie Baron hit a solo home run to increase the Hawks' lead to 8-0. Keller made the score 8-1 in the fourth on the power of her second homer of the season, but Monmouth tacked on a single-run in the fifth to secure the 9-1 victory in five innings.

Canisius senior Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed nine runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Monmouth starter Megan Stauffer moved to 5-4 on the year with the complete-game victory. She allowed just one run on three hits to go with two strikeouts.
