Softball Splits With Rider At Home

The Canisius softball team closed out the weekend at home splitting the day with  Rider. The Golden Griffins outscored the Broncs in the first game by a score of 6-4, before falling the 13-5, in the afternoon game. The split moves the Broncs to 15-27 overall and 6-8 in MAAC play, while the Griffs moved to 10-31 on the season, and 6-8 in conference action.

GAME ONE
Rider jumped out to an early 3-1 lead thanks to an RBI single from Toni Nino and an RBI-single off the bat of Rachael Zeides in the top-half of the third. The Griffs got on the board in the home-half of the third when sophomore Morgan Altman hit an RBI-single to right field to score freshman Erin Hufford. Junior Denver Keller followed up with a two run homer to plate Altman and tie the game, 3-3 later in the frame.
 
Sophomore Brittany Sockwell hit an RBI-single in the fifth, allowing the Griffs to take the lead, 4-3. Rider answered with two RBI's in the top of the seventh to take the lead, 5-4. Freshman Lindsi Dennis stepped up for Canisius, notching a bases-loaded RBI-single to win the game, 6-4.
 
Senior Erika Mackie earned in the circle for Canisius after she allowed five runs, on nine hits. She also fanned three batters.

Hufford went 3-for-4 in game one, while Altman and Keller each had two hits in the win for Canisius. Five other Griffs notched one hit as well.

GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, Rider jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, until the home-half of the third when Dennis and Sockwell each tallied and RBI single, cutting the Broncs lead, 6-4. Rider added to their lead in the seventh inning when they tallied four RBI's to secure the win.
 
Hufford ended the game by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Keller went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Canisius freshman Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle after she allowed six runs on seven hits in the contest. Junior Molly Hennessy helped the effort by allowing seven runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

GAME NOTES
• The doubleheader with Rider marked the 47th and 48th all-time meetings between the two schools. Canisius leads the series, 33-15.
• Keller's home run in game one is the ninth of her career.
• Three Griffs tallied a multi-hit game in the first contest.

Up Next
The Griffs will continue conference play , May 1st, when the team hosts Siena. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
