Baseball Wins Rain Soaked Slugfest, 17-10

GAME RECAP
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius battled the elements for four hours, pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of eight Niagara errors to come away with the 17-10 slugfest victory over Niagara Wednesday night at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Golden Griffins improve to 22-15 on the season as the Purple Eagles' slide continues to five games, falling to 12-22 overall.

The Purple Eagles began the marathon game with two runs in the top of the first on a RBI double by sophomore Peter Battaglia and a single by senior Owen Dziados to take the modest 2-0 lead.

Senior Cyrus Senior got one run right back for the Griffs in the bottom of the frame as he led off with a triple into the right field gap which turned into him scoring as Niagara bobbled he relay throw, allowing him to sprint all the way around the bases for the Blue and Gold's first run.

The 2-1 Niagara advantage held until the bottom of the fourth when Canisius unloaded for its first of two five run innings. In the stanza, the Griffs five runs occurred on three hits and three errors capped off by a two-run double by senior Gage Lanning, putting Canisius in front 6-2.

Niagara didn't go away quietly as they put up a three spot in the top of fifth as Battaglia hammered a three-run shot the dead center field, getting the Purple Eagles to within one at 6-5.

The sixth saw both sides combine for 10 runs as the two squads scored five runs each in their half of the inning. Niagara's five runs came on six hits with its big blow coming on a two-run triple by redshirt senior Trevor McCauley, which turned out to be its last runs of the contest.

Canisius' portion of the sixth frame included four hits, one error, two wild pitch runs and was punctuated by a RBI single by sophomore Brett Migliore, giving the Golden Griffins the 11-10 lead.

The Griffs didn't look back as they added three runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to pad their lead and cruise to the 17-10 victory.

After Canisius freshman right-hander Omar Ward barely got out of the first inning, junior Jared Kennedy did a yeoman's work for the following three frames, surrendering no runs on allowing three total base runners on two singles and a hit batsman.

Four of the next five relievers for the Blue and Gold saw one full inning action with sophomore Carson Perkins getting credit for the win. The Bienfait, Saskatchewan, native, went 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits before handing the ball over two other teams who recorded the final six outs.

Niagara freshman right-hander Ben Erwin started on the mound as he was taxed for four runs (one earned) on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore Alex MacKinnon was charged for the loss in his one inning appearance out of the bullpen that saw five runs cross the plate (two earned), two by wild pitch.
