Baseball Earns 8-5 Victory

GAME RECAP
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius grinded out an 8-5 victory over visiting Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The win pushes the Griffs to 21-14 overall and 10-5 in conference play, as the loss drops the Bobcats to 18-20 on the season and 10-2 in league action.

The Golden Griffins exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning as senior Ryan Stekl roped a three-run, bases clearing triple to right center and scored a few batters later on a fielder's choice. Junior Conner Morro closed out the scoring in the frame as he raced home on a fielder's choice, putting Canisius up 5-0.

A double by sophomore Jake Burlingame scoring redshirt senior Christ Conley in the third and a Stekl single plating senior Gage Lanning in the fourth, pushed the Blue and Gold's lead to 7-0 after four innings.

Quinnipiac answered back with two runs in the fifth on a RBI double by sophomore Andre Marrero, who later scored on Canisius throwing error.

In the sixth, Canisius ran into trouble as five different Golden Griffins' pitchers were on the mound and issued in succession with the bases loaded a walk and two hit-by-pitches to force in three runs cutting the deficit to 7-5, the closest Quinnipiac got the rest of the way.

Canisius tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as senior Joseph Preziuso darted for his team's eighth, and final, run.

Junior right-hander Andrew Sipowicz received the Sunday start for the Blue and Gold picking up the win in 5.1 innings of work. The 6-foot-2, 211-pounder, allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out three.

After two Canisius relievers faced six batters in the sixth inning, senior Tyler Smith got the Griffs out of the bases loaded jam and went the rest of the game for the 3.1 inning save. The Trafford, Pa., native, didn't surrender a run the rest of the way as he scattered three hits and fanned eight batters.

For Quinnipiac, junior Tyler Poulin was knocked around in his four innings on the hill as he gave up seven runs on eight hits, walking three and hitting two others.
