Six Run Fifth Inning Leads Baseball to Sixth Straight Victory

GAME RECAP
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the second straight game, Canisius had to come back from an early deficit, but the Golden Griffins prevailed 9-5 over Campbell Friday evening. The win, the Griffs sixth in a row, moves the Blue and Gold to 6-2 on the 2018 campaign.

Campbell's offense came out swinging in the bottom of the first as they posted a two-run single and three-run home run to lead 5-0 after the first inning.

Canisius answered right back in the second with a double by sophomore Jake Burlingame that plated redshirt sophomore William Krull, and a sacrifice fly by senior Christ Conley, scoring junior Canice Ejoh, got the Griffs to within three at 5-2.

The Blue and Gold blew the game open in the top half of the fifth as they exploded for six runs on four hits with three walks and two hit by pitches. Junior Conner Morro completed the comeback putting Canisius ahead 6-5 with a two-run single to right field, scoring junior Mark McKenna and Wilson. Later in the inning, the Griffs drew three straight walks to load the bases with two outs, forcing in two straight runs. The Golden Griffins ended the inning leading 8-5.

Krull added an insurance run for the Blue and Gold with a solo home run in the seventh, his second of the season, to put the Griffs up for good, 9-5.

Junior right-hander Andrew Sipowicz started on the bump for Canisius. The Buffalo, N.Y. native, had a shaky first inning, allowing five runs, but went on to get through four full innings. Fellow classmate, Jared Kennedy came on in relief to pick up the victory, his first of the year. The 6-foot-1, 194-pound left-hander scattered two hits and struck out five in five innings of work to finish the game.

GAME NOTES
• The win marks the sixth in a row for Canisius, tying its longest winning streak since 2016 (May 15-20).
• Kennedy's five strikeouts was the most of his career.
• Krull had one career home run entering this season and he now has home runs in back-to-back contests.
