Baseball Bests West Virginia, 4-3

GAME RECAP
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Canice Ejoh's two-run single in the fourth inning was the difference for Canisius as the Golden Griffins avoided the sweep, knocking off West Virginia 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark. The win snaps a three-game slide for the Blue and Gold, pushing their record to 11-6, as the Mountaineers fall back to even on the season at 9-9.

West Virginia put the first crooked number on the scoreboard in the first inning as redshirt sophomore Marques Inman shot a ball down the left field line, bringing around junior Andrew Zitel to plate the games' first run.

Canisius had to wait until the third inning to respond when redshirt senior Liam Wilson lifted a ball to deep center field, allowing freshman Jacob Martins to dart home from third. A wild pitch two batters later saw Ejoh race home, giving the Griffs the early 2-1 advantage.

Ejoh gave the Golden Griffins the lead for good the next inning as he powered a ball back up in the middle and juniors Conner Morro and Mark McKenna both came into score, putting Canisius ahead 4-1.

A sacrifice fly by WVU junior Kyle Gray in the seventh cut the Canisius lead to 4-2; and that's the way the score held heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Senior closer Tyler Smith entered looking to shut the door for the Blue and Gold. Smith set down the first two batters on a ground out and fly out, before running into trouble. The Trafford, Pa., native, surrendered back-to-back walks, then saw a high-chopper go over his head into shallow center field, allowing Gray to scamper home from second, cutting the deficit to one, at 4-3.

The next batter, sophomore Brandon White, hit a rocket to sophomore Brett Migliore at shortstop, who was able to corral the missile and underhand it to Martins covering second base to end the ballgame.

Senior southpaw J.P. Stevenson battled for seven innings, his third such outing of the campaign. The crafty lefty gave up two runs, while scattering seven hits and striking out three. Sophomore Will Frank saw his fifth action of the season, throwing a scoreless eighth inning before handing the ball to Smith for the ninth.

The Mountaineers bullpen received a lot of work as six relievers were called upon, none seeing more than 2.1 innings of work, after junior right-hander Braden Zarbnisky started the game, only going one inning. Sophomore righty Kade Strowd got saddled with the loss for the Mountaineers.
