Reese and Molson Earn MAAC Weekly Awards

The MAAC office announced Monday that Canisius sophomore Isaiah Reese and freshman guard Takal Molson have been named the MAAC Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after the Golden Griffins beat Niagara and Marist to secure a share of the 2017-18 MAAC regular-season championship.

For Reese, this marks the third time this season he's been honored as the MAAC Player of the Week. In two games at Niagara and against Marist, the Miami, Fla., native averaged 21.5 points per game, highlighted by his 26-point performance against the Purple Eagles Feb. 21. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 55.2 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from 3-point land and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. Earlier in the day on Monday, Reese was named to the All-MAAC First Team, making him the first Canisius guard to garner that honor since Billy Baron in 2013-14.

For Molson, Monday's announcement marks the fourth time this season he's been named the league's rookie of the week, the most for a Canisius newcomer since Frank Turner won the award six times in 2006-07. Molson was good for 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last week in two outings, which featured a 24-point effort in the team's regular-season finale victory over Marist. In the win at Niagara, the Buffalo native was credited with a career-high four steals, and in the victory over the Red Foxes on Feb. 25, he matched a career-high with four 3-point field goals. Molson was also honored by the MAAC earlier on Monday, as he became the 11th player in school history to be named to the league's All-Rookie Team.

Canisius, which earned its first MAAC regular-season crown since 1993-94 with a school-record 15 conference wins, is the No. 2 seed in this weekend's MAAC Basketball Championship in Albany, N.Y. The Griffs return to action Friday, March 2, when the Blue and Gold plays the winner of the Quinnipiac-Siena game. Game time at Times Union Center is set for 9:30 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The radio call will be available on Buffalo's WECK 1230-AM and 102.9-FM, GoGriffs.com and the TUNEIN app.
