Softball Falls to Ball State on Final Day of Pirate Invitational

The Canisius softball team fell to Ball State, 11-4, on the final day of the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. With the loss, the Golden Griffins drop to 3-11 on the season.

The Blue and Gold got the action started in the top of first when sophomore Morgan Altman tripled to right field, scoring freshman Erin Hufford who had doubled to lead off the game. Altman crossed plate later in the stanza to put the Griffs up, 2-0.

Ball State answered right back in the home half of the first as the Cardinals pushed a run in on two Canisius passed balls and a wild pitch. Ball State got the equalizer on a solo home run to left field by senior Danae King.

That score held until the bottom of the fourth inning when the home team broke the game open with eight runs on seven hits, including three separate two-run doubles, to lead 11-3.

Canisius tacked on a run in the fifth as junior Molly Hennessy hit a solo shot down the left field line.

Freshman got the start in the circle for the Griffs. The East Amherst, N.Y. native, only lasted 1.1 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits. Hennessy, who was saddled with the loss, went the next 2.1 innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits before handing the ball to senior Erika Mackie for the remaining 2.1 innings.
