Softball Drops Two to Morehead State

The Canisius softball team started out its weekend stay down south with a pair of losses on Friday. The Golden Griffins (3-13) started the trip with a pair of losses to Morehead State on the first day of the Morehead State Classic.

In the first game, the Eagles (15-4) took a 2-0 lead after scoring twice in the home half of the first. Sophomore Morgan Altman hit a two run homerun in the top half of the third, allowing the Blue and Gold to cut the Eagles lead to just one run. The last run for the Griffs came in the top half of the fifth, when freshman Kara Paradowski scored off a fly-out to right field by sophomore Ashley Barnett.

Morehead State had a strong showing in the bottom of the fifth adding two more runs to the scoreboard. The home squad took the first game, 5-3.

Canisius pounded out six hits in the loss, Altman was the only Griff to have a multi-hit performance as she record two hits in the contest.

The squad had four other players record at least one hit. Freshman Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle after she allowed five runs on six hits in 6 innings of work.

In the second game, Morehead State scored three times in the first and twice in the second, to score a 5-2 win over Canisius. The win improved Morehead State to 15-4 on the year.

The Griffs scored their only runs of game in the top of the sixth. The first run was earned by sophmore Chelsea Czapkowski, who scored on a fly-out to left field off the bat of Altman. Freshman Erin Hufford scored the final run of the day for Canisius, after she stole home on a passed ball. 

Senior Erika Mackie took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed five earned runs, on seven hits to go with two walk and three strikeouts.

Canisius will return to action tomorrow, March 10th, at 11 a.m. against IUPUI.
