Softball Earns a Pair of Wins in North Carolina

The Canisius softball team scored a pair of wins on Saturday on the second day of the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C., as the Golden Griffins defeated Saint Francis University 1-0 before downing host East Carolina 4-3 in eight innings in the nightcap. The wins move the Blue and Gold to 3-10 on the season.

Canisius scored its first extra-inning win of the season on Saturday night as freshman Kara Paradowski drove in fellow rookie Emily Nicosia with an RBI-single through the right side of the infield to give the Blue and Gold a 4-3 win over East Carolina, giving the Griffs back-to-back wins for the first time this year. The Pirates led 3-1 heading into the top-half of the seventh, but Canisius forced extra-innings by scoring a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to make the score 3-3. After the Griffs took the 4-3 lead in the eighth, Nicosia returned to the circle and retired ECU in order to score the win.

Canisius recorded six hits in the win, led by Paradowski, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. She also scored two of the team's four runs in the win. Nicosia came on in relief and picked up her second win of the season after she allowed four hits and posted a strikeout in five innings of work.

In the first game, junior Lauren Castro did all of the game's scoring with one swing, as she hit her first homer of the season over the fence in right to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead in the fourth. That run would be enough support for senior pitcher Erika Mackie, who picked up the victory in the circle after she went the distance and gave up just one hit while fanning three.

Canisius will close out its weekend trip to the Pirate Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 25, when the team plays Ball State. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
