Softball Falls Twice at Pirate Invitational

The Canisius softball team started out its weekend down south with a pair of losses on Friday. The Golden Griffins opened the day with a 1-0 loss to Saint Francis, before falling to Ball State 2-0, on the first day of the Pirate Invitational at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

In the first game, the Red Flash (6-5) took a 1-0 lead after scoring a run in the home-half of the third. Canisius pounded out four hits in the loss, with junior Destiny Holani picking up two of those hits for the Blue and Gold.

Sophomore Gianna Degaltini and junior Lauren Castro each recorded a hit in the contest. Senior Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle after she allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.

In the second game, Ball State scored twice in the fourth en route to the 2-0 victory. The win improved Ball State to 6-2 on the year. Freshman Erin Hufford had a hit and stole two bases in the losing effort, while sophomore Ashley Barnett went 2-for-3 at the dish for the Blue and Gold.

Castro took the loss for the Griffs against Ball State after she allowed two runs on five hits to go with three strikeouts and three walks in 4.1 innings.

Canisius will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24, when the team plays a pair of games on day two of the Pirate Classic. Action will get started for the Griffs at 3 p.m., when the squad takes on Saint Francis.
