Softball Splits On Final Day in Cleveland

Game Recap
The Canisius softball team went 1-1 on Sunday on the final day of the CSU Dome Invite in Cleveland, Ohio. The Golden Griffins started the day with a 4-3 win over Robert Morris before falling to Cleveland State 2-1 in the nightcap. Canisius is now 1-3 on the season.

Canisius lead Robert Morris 1-0 after two innings of play thanks to an RBI-double from Gianna Degaltini, but the Colonials scored three runs in the top of the fourth to go up 3-1. The score would remain 3-1 in favor of Robert Morris until the top of the sixth, when Kara Paradowski scored a run, off of a throwing error by the shortstop. The Blue and Gold were trailing the Colonials 3-2 until the bottom of the seventh when Degaltini hit a single to right field, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from junior Denver Keller and sophomore Morgan Altman to end the game in favor of the Griffs 4-3.

Altman went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the win, while Degaltini had two hits, and each player had a double for the Blue and Gold. Freshman Emily Nicosia (1-1) earned the win, as she allowed one earned run on five hits to go with three strikeouts. Junior Lauren Castro threw 3.2 innings for Canisius and allowed two runs on two hits to go with two strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, Cleveland State (2-2) scored twice in the first and then held the Blue and Gold to just one run en route to an 2-1 win. Seven Griffs earned a hit while Erika Mackie (0-2) took the loss in the circle after she allowed two runs on three hits to go with four strikeouts.

Game Notes
• This was the 21st all-time game between Canisius and Cleveland State, with Cleveland State leading the series 12-9.
• The Griffs improved to 13-8 all-time against Robert Morris with the victory.
• This marks the fifth time Canisius has taken part in the CSU Dome Invite event, and the Griffs have been .500 or better out of the first weekend three times.
• Canisius pounded out a total of 25 hits in the first four games of the season.

Up Next
Canisius will travel south to Jacksonville, Fla. to take part in Jacksonville's Spring Tournament, which is set to begin Feb. 16. The Griffs will play two games on Feb. 16, as they meet UT-Arlington at 1 p.m., and the host Jacksonville Dolphins at 6 p.m..
