Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Youngstown State Takes Care of Women’s Basketball, 62-36

Game Recap
Youngstown State senior Alison Smolinski tied a Koessler Athletic Center record with nine 3-point field goals en route to 29 points to help lead the visiting Penguins to a 62-36 win over Canisius Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action. The win moves Youngstown State to 6-2 on the season, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-6 with the loss.

Smolinski is the fourth player to hit nine 3-pointers in a game, and she is the first woman's player to accomplish the feat. The last player to hit nine three-balls in a contest was Canisius men's player Kassius Robertson, who hit nine triples against Marist Jan. 14, 2017. The last opposing player to make nine 3-point field goals in the Koessler Athletic Center was Manhattan's Bruce Seals, who nine treys in a four-overtime men's game back on Jan. 31, 2000.

For Canisius, junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks led the way for the Blue and Gold with 11 points, while senior Zhane Irby and juniors Shannon Conley and Anna Sweny each added six points. Canisius shot just 25.5 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from 3-point land and ended the day by making both of its chances from the free-throw line. The Griffs were charged with 13 turnovers in the loss, which Youngstown State turned in 13 points.

The Penguins took a 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime, with 11 of those points coming from Smolinski and eight points being scored by Sarah Cash. In the third quarter, Youngstown State pulled away thanks to nine points by Smolinksi, who went 3-for-5 from behind the arc in the third period. A 3-pointer by Irby 1:12 into the third quarter got Canisius within four points at 28-24, but the Penguins responded with a 19-2 run over the game's next 6:19 to put Youngstown State up 49-26 with 1:47 left in the third stanza.

Canisius junior Tiana Pugh scored five points to go with three boards and two steals in the losing effort, while senior Sara Hinriksdottir pulled down a team-high six rebounds. For the game, Youngstown State out rebounded Canisius 39-24, and the Penguins outscored Canisius 16-8 in the paint.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"This one was tough, I am disappointed in a number of things, but I am not one to make excuses, so as a head coach I have to make sure our players come out and put together a better 40 minutes. My staff and I have to do a better job at making sure we are getting accountability out of the players consistently."
